Renaissance of Traditional Chinese Culture

Part Ii—classical Chinese Dance

-

At the heart of the Shen Yun performance is an incredible art form known as classical Chinese dance. It dates back thousands of years. Dynasty after dynasty, it was enriched and refined, becoming one of the world’s most comprehensive dance systems.

In China today, it’s regularly mixed with military or modern dance styles to the point that people don’t know what, exactly, they’re watching. Only Shen Yun performs classical Chinese dance in its purest form, preserving its traditional aesthetic the way it was originally passed down. Audiences everywhere have been overwhelmed by its striking beauty and elegance.

Besides classical dance, Shen Yun also performs traditional

“The dances were graceful, delicate, and beautiful! There was something pure, bright, and very dignified about them.”

—Anna Liceica, former soloist of American Ballet Theatre

“It’s amazing; it’s just a pure joy to watch... It is something that hits the inside enough that you just need to see it for yourself... It’s something not to be missed.”

—Matthew C. Flynn, actor, producer

Chinese ethnic and folk dances. With their vivid costumes, distinct rhythms, and unique dance styles, they whisk you up to the Himalayas or across the boundless Mongolian plains.

Storytelling Through Dance

Each year, Shen Yun programs feature dance stories that vividly depict cherished stories of the past. Even though the dances are presented without dialogue, the profound meaning and spirit of the stories expressed through movement, music, and an animated backdrop have touched the hearts of millions around the world. Their heroes embody the most exalted virtues of Chinese civilization and convey morals still relevant in our day.

“The performances are brilliant; they’re moving; they’re dazzling. The storytelling was incredible—even though they’re not saying a word, you totally understand what’s going on.”

—Julie Nesrallah, mezzo-soprano & classical radio host

Many of the tales and characters depicted in Shen Yun dances draw inspiration from ancient records and classics. For example, Journey to the West is one of the four classics of Chinese literature. It was written during the Ming Dynasty in the 16th century. This beloved adventure tale combines action, humor, and spiritual lessons.

Inner Beauty Shines Through Movements

Shen Yun’s artists draw inspiration from the spiritual discipline Falun Dafa, also known as Falun Gong, and follow its three basic principles—truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance—in their daily lives. Practicing Falun Dafa is more than just meditation, it’s a state of mind oriented toward self-betterment and putting others first. These qualities have taken root in Shen Yun performers’ daily lives and flow naturally from their artistic expression. During the performance, Shen Yun dancers exhibit that inner quality, and the result is deeply touching storytelling and exquisite beauty experienced by audiences worldwide. This is the second part in the series “Renaissance of Traditional Chinese Culture.” We’ll introduce various aspects of Shen Yun in the months leading up to the season opening in December 2019.
