SAN MATEO >> An officer shot and injured two people after a car chase in San Mateo on Saturday, police said.

The shooting occurred on the 500 block of E. Hillsdale Court about 5:20 p.m. when the vehicle the officers had been pursuing drove at them, according to a statement issued by San Mateo police.

The chase began shortly after 5 p.m. at Hillsdale Shopping Center. Police said an officer spotted a Chevrolet with temporary license plates registered to a Honda, which led officers to believe it was stolen.

The Chevrolet exited the mall parking lot and sped off when officers tried to pull it over, according to police. The occupants appeared to toss credit cards from the car at El Camino Real and 31st Avenue.

Police said the Chevrolet hit a vehicle on the 400 block of E. Hillsdale Boulevard and continued toward E. Hillsdale Court, where it ended up in a cul-de-sac.

The Chevrolet drove toward officers as they approached on foot to take the occupants into custody, according to police. One officer opened fire, hitting two people inside the Chevrolet. Both were taken to a trauma center with unspecified injuries.

An investigation is underway into the shooting. No officers were injured in the incident, department spokesman Officer Michael Haobsh said Sunday.

Haobsh said the two suspects were still in the hospital Sunday afternoon but were listed in stable condition.

Additional details about the shooting were not available Sunday.
