Bindi Irwin will walk down aisle with koala
Bindi Irwin is fully immersed in planning her 2020 wedding to American wakeboarder Chandler Powell.
But it turns out that the 21-year-old's “something borrowed, something blue” list of bridal accessories will include something cute: a koala.
Irwin, the conservationist daughter of the late “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin, revealed in a recent interview that both her brother Robert, 15, and a furry gray marsupial will walk her down the aisle when she weds Powell. Irwin, 21, told Good Morning America last week, “I'm not sure how many people have walked down the aisle with a koala.”
“But we may be setting some new trends for weddings from here on out!” continued the TV personality, who stars with Powell and her family on the series “Crikey: It's the Irwins.” Irwin didn't reveal the name or age of the koala that will be in her wedding, but it's not surprising that one would be a good enough friend to have an honored place on her big day.
The ceremony is expected to take place at the Australia Zoo, the wildlife conservation park on Queensland's Sunshine Coast that was initially founded by Steve Irwin's parents in 1970. For Bindi, the Australia Zoo is home: “She could not get through her day without connecting with the animals around her,” according to her zoo biography.
Bindi's mother, Terri Irwin, now runs the Australia Zoo and was her father's co-host on “The Crocodile Hunter” and the family's other unconventional nature series. Terri Irwin continues to carry on the legacy of Steve Irwin, who died in 2006 from being injured when a stingray barb pierced his chest.
Bindi Irwin and Powell began dating in 2013. The former wakeboarder told People magazine that he visited the Australia Zoo while in that country for a professional competition. “It just so happened that Bindi was giving tours that day,” Powell told People. “I'm like, ‘Wow she is amazing.'”
Powell proposed to Bindi Irwin on her 21st birth in July, she announced in a “The easiest part of wedding planning is just knowing that I get to marry this amazing guy,” Irwin gushed to “Good Morning America.”
