Gurley has bruised thigh, may miss 49ers game

-

Todd Gurley has missed practice with a bruised left thigh, and the Los Angeles Rams don’t know whether their star running back will play against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Coach Sean McVay says Gurley’s injury “caught us all off-guard.”

The Rams (3-2) haven’t played since last Thursday, when they lost 30-29 at Seattle. The team initially thought Gurley’s thigh problem was typical postgame soreness, but the Rams held him out of practice Wednesday along with cornerback Aqib Talib, who has bruised ribs.

RAMSEY PRACTICES >> Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey practiced for the first time in three weeks, rejoining teammates two days after seeing a back specialist. Ramsey participated in a limited capacity, taking part in individual drills before spending the rest of the session working with team trainers on the side.

“It’s nice to see Jalen’s face,” fellow cornerback D.J. Hayden said. “It’s good to see Jalen out there.”

It remains to be seen whether Ramsey plays Sunday against New Orleans (41).

Ramsey missed seven consecutive practices because of illness, back tightness and the birth of his second daughter. His back caused him to miss the past two games. He saw a specialist in Houston on Monday.

GIANTS TAKE ON PATS MINUS

OFFENSIVE FIREPOWER >> The heavily underdog New York Giants are going to be without their top two running backs and their two leading receivers against the New England Patriots. Coach Pat Shurmur said running back Saquon Barkley (ankle) and Wayne Gallman (concussion), wide receiver Sterling Shepard (concussion) and tight end Evan Engram will not play tonight against the defending Super Bowl champion Patriots (5-0).

CHIEFS’ HILL CLOSE TO RETURNING >> The Chiefs could get star wide receiver Tyreek Hill (broken collarbone) back for Sunday’s game against Houston, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes avoided any serious injury to his ankle, though that may be about the end of their positive news on the injury front.

The Chiefs placed defensive tackle Xavier Williams on injured reserve after he sustained a high ankle sprain in last weekend’s 19-13 loss to the Colts. He was among a handful of crucial players that went down during the game, many of whom could still be out for Week 6. Left tackle Eric Fisher remains sidelined after core muscle surgery. Defensive tackle Chris Jones, wide receiver Sammy Watkins and offensive lineman Andrew Wylie all missed practice after they were hurt during the game against the Colts. CHARGERS’ POUNCEY PLACED ON IR >> The Los Angeles Chargers have been dealt a setback on the offensive line with center Mike Pouncey going on injured reserve. Coach Anthony Lynn said the nine-year veteran will have season-ending neck surgery after being injured during last Sunday.
