SAN JOSE >> A man was fatally shot early Saturday morning after a fight broke out during a party at an apartment complex near San Jose State University.

Authorities were called just after 2 a.m. to the 500 block of South 10th Street, near East William Street about two blocks off campus, according to San Jose police. They found a man who had been shot and took him to a hospital, where he died.

Police identified the victim only as an adult man. A spokeswoman for San Jose State said he was not a student at the university.

The killing marks the 30th homicide in San Jose this year.

South 10th Street was shut down between William and Reed streets as police and detectives investigated the scene.

The shooting happened in the courtyard of the Kennedy Hall apartment complex, where dozens of people had gathered for a party that stretched from late Friday night to early Saturday, according to a San Jose State student who lives in the building.

The student, who declined to give her name, said a fight between two women grew to involve their groups of friends and eventually became “this huge brawl.” Then, she said, she heard a single gunshot and saw a man she did not know bleeding in the courtyard near her door.

“I’m really sad somebody lost their life over whatever that was,” the student said. “He probably just came to have fun and that’s what happened.”

Hours after the shooting Saturday, authorities appeared to be investigating a large scene that stretched well beyond the three-story gray apartment complex where most of the tenants are students.

More than a dozen yellow evidence markers could be seen down the block from the building, on the sidewalks of both 10th and William streets. Several appeared to be clustered around an electric scooter outside of a smoke shop around the corner from the apartments.

Police said the motive for the shooting is under investigation, and that no suspects have been identified or arrested.

They asked anyone with information to call Detective Sergeant John Cary or Detective Elizabeth Ramirez at 408-277-5283, or Crime Stoppers at 408947-7867.
