FREMONT >> Three suspects in a credit union robbery Monday evening were arrested after their getaway vehicle was disabled on Interstate 880, authorities said.

The robbery happened about 5:31 p.m. Monday at the Provident Credit Union in the Fremont Hub shopping center.

Police dispatchers received a 911 call of robbery in progress and officers responded to the area.

Two men who who had robbed the credit union of cash were seen fleeing in a vehicle driven by a woman, police said. A police sergeant saw the vehicle going westbound on Mowry Avenue and began pursuing it.

The vehicle got onto northbound I-880 and the California Highway Patrol joined the pursuit, police said.

At one point, a CHP vehicle did a “pursuit intervention technique” (PIT) maneuver on the suspects’ vehicle, causing it to turn around and eventually stop near the Whipple Road exit in Hayward, police said.

One of the men tried to flee on foot but was quickly captured. The other two suspects remained in the vehicle and were arrested.

Police said evidence of the robbery was located on the man who tried to run away and other evidence of the robbery was found in the vehicle.

The three suspects were taken to a hospital for a precautionary medical evaluation before being booked at Santa Rita Jail, police said. Their names have not been released. A motorist whose vehicle was struck on the freeway by the suspects’ vehicle complained of pain and was also taken to a hospital for evaluation.

No officers were injured. Both the robbery and collisions remain under investigation.
