New budgetconscious hostels near Mount Bachelor
BEND, OREGON » Central Oregon offers overnight accommodations of every variety, from hotels to inns and bed-and-breakfasts. But two recent additions to Bend’s hotel scene offer something new — lodges that cater to budget-minded adventure seekers and sports travelers.
The newly renovated Bunk + Brew Historic Lucas House and Loge Bend both have traditional private guest rooms, but they also offer a hostel experience with bunk beds and shared rooms. Common areas let guests connect after a day on the slopes or the trails. And the entire vibe can be summed up by “Get outdoors!”
Loge Bend
The closest lodging to Mount Bachelor, the former Entrada Loge (pronounced “lodge”) is just 20 minutes from the slopes — and 10 minutes from downtown Bend. The Loge Camps company began its resuscitation of the old lodge a few years back. Now with the addition of a 10-bed hostel, a cafe and bar, and a seasonal bike/snow sports rental and retail shop, it’s been rechristened Loge Bend. Stroll the pine-dotted grounds, check out the easy trail access and take in the pool, hot tub and fire pits — and, of course, s’mores.
ROOMS » Each of the lodge’s 79 guest rooms are tastefully outfitted with two comfy beds (or a bed and sofa setup), reclaimed wood, TV, fridge and microwave, Wi-fi and even a hammock suspended from the ceiling beams. Plus inroom mini-stores selling hats, mugs, phone cables and other essentials. EXTRAS » Borrow cruiser bikes and accessories, coolers and ski lockers. Take in a free Friday night movie or Saturday night concerts. (And 1% of the lodge profits go to local nonprofit causes.)

Bunk + Brew Historic Lucas House
This historic home, built for constable Albert Lucas’
family in 1910, was the first brick building in Bend. Fast-forward to 2016 as new owners J. Charles Griggs and Frankie Maduzia began its restoration and conversion into a hostel/b&b hybrid, with a beer garden and rotating food trucks parked at the curb, and the restaurants and watering holes of downtown Bend just three blocks away.
This summer brought a new outdoor bathhouse with two baths, three showers and a sauna — and what’s billed, tongue in cheek, as the “Dirtbag Special.” For $15 ($10 during the winter), you can drop in, shower and sauna in the bathhouse, do laundry ($5 extra), and chill out on the grounds from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
ROOMS » There are seven private rooms and four hostel rooms with bunks, including one female-only room. Bathrooms and showers are down the hall. In keeping with the “sense of community” goal, there are no TVS in the guest rooms — instead, there’s a communal TV room. The rooms are not fancy, but they’re clean and functional, and the beds are firm and comfortable. Amenities include free Wifi, free parking and a fully equipped shared kitchen. EXTRAS » The kitchen is well-stocked with fresh fruit, pancake ingredients and the like for DIY breakfasts. There’s free beer at check-in and secured equipment storage. Ask about their organized pub crawls and occasional shuttle service to local attractions. (And if you see Sadie Lucas, the resident ghost, be sure to say hi.)
