49ers’ Bosa, brother Joey win Player of Week awards

- Staff and wire reports — Cam Inman

Rookie sensation Nick Bosa and his older brother, Joey, swept NFC and AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors Wednesday for their roles in leading the 49ers and Los Angeles Chargers, respectively, to victories Sunday.

They were the first brothers to each produce at least two sacks in the same week since Toby and Jimmy Williams did it in 1985.

Nick Bosa’s three sacks and doozy of a first career interception led the undefeated 49ers’ defensive showing in a 51-13 rout of the Carolina Panthers.

Earlier Sunday, Joey Bosa posted two sacks for a second straight game to lift the Chargers over Chicago.

Nick Bosa has earned NFC player of the week honors two times in four weeks, the first for his show against the Cleveland Browns in Week 5, and he was the first 49ers defensive lineman so honored since Bryant Young in the 2005 opener. ‘FRUSTRATED’ MAYFIELD

STORMS AWAY FROM INTERVIEW >> Baker Mayfield’s frustration finally boiled over. The losing is beating him. Annoyed with a reporter’s line of questioning about a drive at the end of the first half in last week’s loss at New England, the Browns’ fiery quarterback abruptly ended his weekly interview session and stormed off.

Mayfield, who is tied for the NFL lead with 12 interceptions, grew increasingly agitated when a reporter asked him about a failed two-minute drive in a 27-13 loss to the Patriots. The Browns were called for a penalty, which Mayfield said prevented them from moving the ball.

“Was I happy with the drive? No, we didn’t score points,” Mayfield said. “That’s the dumbest question you could ask. What?”

Mayfield then disgustedly walked away from the lectern and toward his locker.

Soon after, the former No. 1 overall pick went on Twitter to explain his exasperation. Picked by some experts to win the AFC North, the Browns (2-5) haven’t played up to enormous expectations and have lost three straight games.

“Everybody wants to hear the truth until they actually get it,” Mayfield wrote. “I am who I am and always have been. Don’t call it emotional when it’s convenient and then passion when it fits. I care about winning, so yeah I’m frustrated.

“If I was to act like it’s okay to lose, then y’all would say that I’ve gotten complacent. My sense of urgency is at an all time high.” CHARGERS TURN TO STEICHEN >> Anthony Lynn is hoping the Los Angeles Chargers can get into a better rhythm on offense with Shane Steichen calling the plays the rest of the season.

Lynn named Steichen as the team’s offensive coordinator for the rest of the season, two days after Ken Whisenhunt was fired. The Chargers are a disappointing 3-5 and floundering on offense going into Sunday’s game against Green Bay.

Steichen has been coaching in the NFL for nine seasons, all but one with the Chargers.

TANNEHILL BACK AT WORK >> Focusing on football hasn’t been very easy the past week for Ryan Tannehill.

The eight-year veteran quarterback is starting again in the NFL with the Tennessee Titans. Yet Tannehill started preparation for his second start learning his father-in-law died Oct. 23, and he attended the funeral Tuesday in Texas before turning his attention back to work Wednesday.

“It’s been a tough week for my family and myself,” Tannehill said. “Really just trying to lock in when I am in the building and on the practice field on the task at hand and completely focus on what I have to do. But yeah, it’s a tough week. You have heavy hearts and a lot of sadness.”

WILLIAMS FAILED PHYSICAL

FOR HELMET DISCOMFORT >> Standout left tackle Trent Williams is back at Washington’s practice facility, but there’s no certainty that he’ll play at all this season.

Williams didn’t practice, less than 24 hours after reporting following a lengthy holdout. Interim coach Bill Callahan said the 31-yearold failed his physical and couldn’t practice because of discomfort with his helmet.

Williams previously had a growth on his head removed, and the dispute that led to his holdout centered on Washington’s medical staff and its handling of that situation.
