Edwards-Helaire has chance to play for LSU

LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire is off crutches and could be ready to play in the Peach Bowl on Saturday.

“(He’s) a little better . ... He still has a chance to play,” Tigers coach Ed Orgeron told reporters Monday in Atlanta.

Edwards-Helaire reportedly injured his hamstring during practice last week.

The junior has rushed for 1,290 yards and 16 touchdowns and added 50 catches for 399 yards and one score in 13 games. He was a first-team All-SEC selection this season.

No. 1 LSU (13-0) takes on No. 4 Oklahoma (12-1) in a College Football Playoff semifinal at MercedesBe­nz Stadium.

CENTRAL FLORIDA BEATS MARSHALL IN GASPARILLA BOWL >> Richie Grant and Tre’mon Morris-Brash had first-quarter defensive touchdowns, Dillon Gabriel lead three thirdquart­er scoring drives and Central Florida beat Marshall 48-25 in the Gasparilla Bowl at Tampa.

Grant had a 39-yard intercepti­on return on Marshall’s third play from scrimmage 56 seconds into the game and MorrisBras­h recovered a fumble and ran it 55 yards for a score that helped UCF go up 21-0 with 7 minutes left in the first quarter.

Gabriel threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Otis Anderson, connected on a 75-yard score with Marlon Williams, and added a 3-yard TD run as UCF went ahead 45-22 with 6:39 remaining in the third.

Gabriel completed 14 of 24 passes for 260 yards as the Knights (10-3) reached 10 or more wins in a school-record third consecutiv­e season. Williams caught seven passes for 132 yards and Greg McCrae had 80 rushing yards on 14 carries.

SHORT YARDAGE >> Florida State offensive coordinato­r Kendal Briles has accepted a similar position at Arkansas, the Razorbacks announced Monday. Briles spent one season at Florida State, which recently hired Mike Norvell as head coach. Arkansas also has a new head man in Sam Pittman, who is trying to revive a program that went 2-10 this season.

• Offensive coordinato­r Charlie Weis Jr. is leaving Florida Atlantic to take the same position at South Florida, FAOwlAcces­s.com reported Monday. The 26-year-old son of former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis would be the second Owls coordinato­r to join new USF coach Jeff Scott.
