Best single-game performance: Future two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash scored 28 points (including 17 of 18free throws) and dished out 12assists to lead Santa Clara past Maryland 91-79in the opening round of the 1996 tournament.
Top NCAA performer: Center Dennis Awtrey played six NCAA Tournament games over a three-year period (1968-70), averaging 20.7 points and 9.0 rebounds, including 37 points and 13 rebounds in a consolation win over Long Beach State as a senior. In losses his sophomore and junior seasons to top-ranked UCLA and national Player of the Year Lew Alcindor, Awtrey averaged 15.5 points and 9.0 rebounds.
Top coach: Lots of good choices here, including Bob Feerick, Carroll Williams and Dick Davey. We’ll go with Dick Garibaldi, who won 64% of his games over eight seasons (1963-70), guided his program to a No. 2 national ranking during 1968-69, and coached the Broncos to NCAA Tournament berths in his final three seasons.
