Win-loss record: 23-16. Most recent appearance: Beat No. 2 seed Kansas 60-57 to advance to the 2014 Sweet 16 before losing 82-72 to Dayton.

Chances of playing in the 2020NCAAs: 60 percent (a loss to Cal in the Pac-12Tourname­nt didn’t help but the Cardinal had a No. 33 NET ranking).

Best NCAA showing: Three years after Oregon won the first NCAA championsh­ip, Stanford captured the ’42title, beating Dartmouth 53-38in the final. Future Stanford coach Howie Dallmar won MVP honors when star sophomore Jim Pollard, who averaged 21.5points in the first two games, was held out of the final after battling a sinus infection and fever.

Best single-game performanc­e: Guard Arthur Lee nearly single-handedly engineered Stanford’s comeback win over Rhode Island in the 1998 Elite Eight. Lee had 26points, seven assists, four rebounds and two steals, and had a hand in 13of the 14points the Cardinal scored in the final minute of a 79-77 win over Rhode Island that propelled the team into the Final Four.

Top NCAA performer: Point guard Brevin Knight played seven NCAA games for Stanford, averaging 20.0points, 4,6rebounds, 6.6assists and 2.1steals, He owns three of five highest-scoring tournament games by a Stanford player and three games of at least nine assists.

Top coach: While Everett Dean coached the 1942 national championsh­ip team that was 28-4, Mike Montgomery is the Cardinal’s greatest coach. His 1987 team earned the program’s first NCAA bid in 45years and was the first of his 18trips to the tournament, including 10in a row. Montgomery’s 1998squad got Stanford back to the Final Four after 56 years, losing to Kentucky 86-85in overtime in the semifinals.
