10 ‘Music Moments’ that fans shouldn’t miss

- Jim Harrington

What songs are forever linked to specific times, places and people in your life? That’s the question that fuels “Music Moments,” a collection of new recordings and unreleased tracks from some of the coolest acts in the business. The 10-tune offering, drawing from talent from country, rock, R&B and other genres, is presented by the Alzheimer’s Association as a way to honor the connection between music and the most important times of our lives, ones that “we would never want to lose to Alzheimer’s and all other dementia,” according to a news release. “This unprecedented project is an effort to highlight how music marks the most important moments and people in our lives, while raising awareness for Alzheimer’s disease and engaging the public in conversation to advance the cause,” the statement reads. Most of the offerings on “Music Moments” are cover songs. Some of the more intriguing ones include Lee Ann Womack’s take on the Waylon Jennings favorite “Dreaming My Dreams With You,” Jason Isbell’s version of John Prine’s amazing “Hello in There” and Nile Rodgers & Chic’s cover of the Beatles classic “Hey Jude.” There are three non-cover songs in the collection, which come courtesy of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (providing a newly recorded acoustic version of Jett’s own “Hard to Grow Up”), the Head and the Heart (delivering the previously unreleased original “Backwards Breathing”) and Brett Eldredge (with a new version of his track “Raymond”). The tracks are all paired with behindthe-scenes videos from the artists, explaining the significance of the song selections and/or other details and information. In the Isbell video, for example, he describes “Hello in There” as “pretty perfect, as far as songs go” and calls Prine “one of my favorite songwriters in the world,” before talking about the specific connection he feels with the song. “It reminds me of, you know, grandparents and great-aunts and great-uncles,” he says in the behind-the-scenes video. “When you were a kid you depended on them. You know, because in my family, my parents would drop me off at my grandparents’ house and I would stay there all day and my parents would go to work and my granddad would teach me how to play musical instruments to occupy my time.” The songs are available on all major streaming platforms and can be heard at alz.org/musicmoments, where you can also watch the behind-the-scenes videos.
