Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony Award-winning mega hit “Hamilton” is coming to Disney Plus just in time for America’s birthday.

The Walt Disney Company announced Tuesday that the filmed version of the Broadway production is being fast-tracked. Originally scheduled for an Oct. 15, 2021, theatrical release, it will now debut on Disney’s popular streaming service on July 3.

The movie will feature the original Broadway cast led by Miranda and including Oakland native Daveed Diggs.

According to Disney, the film is a leap forward in the art of “live capture” which transports its audience into the world of the Broadway show in a uniquely intimate way.

Thomas Kail, the show’s director, shot three live performances of “Hamilton” featuring the original Broadway cast.

“I’m so proud of how beautifully Tommy Kail has brought ‘Hamilton’ to the screen. He’s given everyone who watches this film the best seat in the house,” Miranda said in a statement. “I’m so grateful to Disney and Disney Plus for reimagining and moving up our release to July 4 weekend of this year, in light of the world turning upside down. I’m so grateful to all the fans who asked for this, and I’m so glad that we’re able to make it happen. I’m so proud of this show. I can’t wait for you to see it.”

Disney paid $75 million for the rights to distribute “Hamilton.”

According to Variety, there are still plans to do a fully mounted big-screen version of the musical, but that remains a long way off.

Of course, it’s currently impossible to see a live version of the stage hit. Broadway has been locked down by the coronavirus and it’s unclear when productions will start again. In late March, a touring version of “Hamilton” at San Francisco’s Orpheum Theater was canceled. It had been scheduled to run through May 31.
