1942: Jim Tobin of the Boston Braves becomes the only pitcher in modern history to hit three home runs in one game. (His fourth at-bat was a fly ball caught against the fence in left field.)
1952: Ron Necciai of the Bristol Twins (Appalachian League) strikes out 27 batters in nine innings.
1955: Mickey Mantle hits three consecutive home runs — two left-handed, one right-handed and none less than 463 feet.
1958: Stan Musial becomes the eighth major leaguer with 3,000 hits.
1961: Dennis Rodman is born in Trenton, New Jersey. On his 42nd birthday, in 2003, he marries Michelle Moyer, his third wife (and counting).
1965: Chris Washburn, the biggest bust in Warriors draft history — and that’s saying something — is born in Hickory, North Carolina
1976: The New York Nets, led by Julius Erving — he averaged 29.3 points and 11 rebounds that season — beat the Denver Nuggets in six games to win the ninth and final ABA championship.

2011: Derek Boogaard, NHL enforcer, dies at 28 of an accidental overdose of alcohol and oxycodone.
