One killed, three stabbed in fight at 7-Eleven

- By Martha Ross

One man was killed and three others were wounded in a fight that broke out at a 7-Eleven store near San Jose State University early Wednesday.

San Jose police Sgt. Enrique Garcia said officers responded at 12:47 a.m. to a fight at the store at 404 S. Sixth St., across from the campus’ South Garage. Officers found two men suffering from one stab wound each.

Both men were taken to a local hospital, where one of the men was pronounced dead, making him the 14th homicide victim in San Jose since the start of the year. The other suffered serious injuries, Garcia said.

A witness reported that one of the men was fighting in the store and was stabbed; a friend who then rushed in to help the victim was stabbed and collapsed outside the store.

When officers were at the scene, they learned that two more men who apparently were involved in the fight had taken themselves to the hospital with non-lifethreatening stab wounds, Garcia said. No suspects have been identified, and no arrests have been made.

The stabbing occurred several hours after police ordered protesters at City Hall to disperse because of the city’s 8:30 p.m. curfew. The crowds were protesting police brutality and the death of George Floyd while in the custody of Minneapolis police on Memorial Day.

But the night was busy for police in other ways. An officer-involved shooting occurred in Japantown at 9:35 p.m. The shooting was not fatal and is believed to be connected to a hit-andrun involving a pedestrian that occurred a few minutes earlier.
