1936: Yankees rookie Joe DiMaggio hits two homers (in one inning) and two doubles in an 18-4 win over the St. Louis Browns. (Joltin’ Joe.)

1955: Harmon Killebrew hits the first of his 573 home runs, a figure that ranked behind only Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron and Willie Mays when he retired in 1975.

1958: Brazil beats France 5-2 in a World Cup semifinal on the strength of three goals by a 17-year-old named Pele.

1960: Juli Inkster, winner of seven major titles and the pride of San Jose State University, is born in Santa Cruz.

1961: Bernie Nicholls, a 70-goal scorer (one of eight in history) who finished his career with the Sharks, is born in Haliburton, Ontario.

1962: Jack Reed homers in the 22nd inning — the only homer he ever will hit — to give the Yankees a 9-7 win over the Detroit Tigers in a game that lasted 7 hours, 22 minutes.

1980: The Atlanta Flames move to Calgary, keep the name.

1983: Don Sutton of the Milwaukee Brewers becomes the eighth pitcher in MLB history to strike out 3,000 batters.

1984: Joe Morgan, the pride of Castlemont High and playing for the A’s, hits his 265th home run as a second baseman, supplantin­g Roger Hornsby as the most prolific slugger at the position. 1987: Happy 33rd birthday to Lionel Messi. (Catch him while you can.)

1997: Randy Johnson of the Seattle Mariners strikes out 19 batters — one short of Roger Clemens’ record — but the A’s beat him 4-1.

2001: Karrie Webb, 26, wins the LPGA Championsh­ip to become the youngest woman to complete theGrandSl­am.

2010: John Isner beats Nicolas Mahut in the longest match in tennis history, taking the fifth set 70-68 to end a first-round Wimbledon marathon that lasted 11 hours and five minutes over three days, twice suspended because of darkness.

2010: Kentucky becomes the first school to have five players taken in the first round of the NBA draft; John Wall goes No. 1 overall, followed by DeMarcus Cousins (5), Patrick Patterson (14), Eric Bledsoe (18) and Daniel Orton (29).

2013: Bryan Bickell and Dave Bolland score 17 seconds apart in the final 1:16 of the third period and the Chicago Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup with a stunning 3-2 comeback victory in Game 6 over the Boston Bruins.
