Slurpee Day, er, Month

- — Linda Zavoral, Staff

The 7-Eleven chain’s long tradition of giving away free Slurpees to customers on its namesake birthday, July 11, will go on hiatus this year.

Citing coronavirus concerns, the company has decided to cancel the 2020 customer giveaway. “Gathering 9 million of our closest friends in stores on one day just didn’t feel right,” Marissa Jarratt, 7-Eleven’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer, said in a statement.

Instead, the company will mark its birthday by gifting 1 million meals to Feeding America, described as the largest domestic hunger-relief organization in the country.

All 33 million members of 7-Eleven’s rewards program will still get a free Slurpee — but the redemption time covers the whole month of July, which will allow for social distancing in stores. And the party will be back in 2021.

“This year, we have to make changes for the greater good,” Jarratt said. “I hope you’ll join us for the in-person party next year.”

The Golden State Warriors, in partnership with Uber Eats, have launched a program to support Bay Area small businesses while feeding essential employees. It’s called Golden Giveback. Here’s how it works:

Every week, the Warriors will promote a different locally owned San Francisco or Oakland restaurant on their social media channels. The team and Uber Eats then will match the revenue of all meals that are ordered by fans using a special promotion code. Those matched monies go to the restaurants, who will use the proceeds to make meals for essential employees in the Bay Area — a list that included the Oakland Fire Department, AC Transit and the Bayview Hunters Point YMCA last week.

Fans will need to purchase their meals using the Uber Eats app. The service will waive delivery fees for this program.

“Dub Nation knows all about strength in numbers, and Golden Giveback, in partnership with Uber Eats, is an incredibly unique way for our fans to support local Bay Area small businesses while feeding local essential workers during the pandemic,” Brandon Schneider, Warriors chief revenue officer, said in a statement announcing the team’s latest COVID-19 response.

You can still get in on the action today by ordering from Home of Chicken and Waffles using the promotion code Goldengiveback2. And for the rest of the month:

Monday-july 14: Tony’s Pizza Napoletana (Use promotion code Goldengiveback3)

July 15-21: Obelisco (Use promotion code Goldengiveback4)

July 22-28: Tin Pot Creamery (Use promotion code Golden Giveback5)

July 29-Aug. 4: Lena’s Soul Food (Use promotion code Golden Giveback6)
