Solar tip: Know in advance that ZNE doesn’t mean you won’t have an energy bill. The term means that the residence’s on-site and renewable energy sources are equal to or greater than the value of the consumed energy.
Appliances and fixtures
Ask about the SEER (seasonal energy efficiency rating) of your builder’s standard HVAC system. Then compare that to your existing system; you’ll likely see the newer systems are up to 60% more efficient.
Builders also incorporate Energy Star-qualified appliances, which use as much as 50% less energy than standard models. These energy-efficient appliances include refrigerators, microwaves and dishwashers, among others.
Another certified green builder, Woodside Homes, uses only lighting products that have earned the Energy Star designation.
Fixtures with qualified lightbulbs, for instance, use about 75% less energy than a traditional incandescent bulb, and last at least six times longer, according to Woodside Homes. These fixtures also produce about 75% less heat, again providing relief for HVAC systems.
Water and more
Finally, let’s not forget all that extra washing — whether of hands, clothing, towels or our bodies — that have become a part of our life during a pandemic. In an upcoming article in this space, we’ll explore the ultra-low-flow and highly efficient plumbing fixtures, as well as energy-efficient and cleaner water heating, available to new-home buyers.
