1934: Happy 86th birthday to Lee Elder, the first African-American to play in The Masters.

1951: Citation is the first horse to win $1 million in a career after taking the Hollywood Gold Cup. (Meanwhile, just down the boulevard, Mister Ed is pulling down six figures per show.)

1967: Eddie Mathews hits his 500th home run — no cheapie, at Candlestic­k off Juan Marichal.

1968: Hank Aaron hits his 500th home run — also against the Giants and reigning Cy Young award winner Mike McCormick. (In Atlanta, though, so could have been a cheapie.)

1970: Pete Rose. Ray Fosse. Ballgame. Career.

1975: Tim Hudson, the first of the Big Three, is born in Columbus, Ga.

1985: The Baltimore Stars defeat the Oakland Invaders 28-24 to win the United States Football League championsh­ip. (Oh, what might have been.)

1994: Minnesota Twins shortstop César Tovar, the second player (after Bert Campaneris) to play all nine positions in an MLB game, dies of pancreatic cancer at 54.

1996: Brett Favre marries Deanna Tynes at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Green Bay, Wis. (Like a storybook.)

2006: Barry Bonds, Steve Finley and Moises Alou become the first trio of 40-year-olds to start in the same outfield. (Matt Morris keeps the ball down, wins 5-3.)

2011: Tom Lewis, 20, shoots a 65 in the opening round of the British Open, the lowest round ever by an amateur in golf’s oldest major. (Cruel game: he finishes 74-76-74.)

2013: Jordan Spieth, 19, becomes the youngest winner on the PGA Tour since Ralph Guldalh in 1931 when he wins the John Deere Classic on the fifth playoff hole.

2014: A’s outfielder Yoenis Cespedes wins the All-Star home run derby for the second year in a row. (Sure enough, he is traded 17 days later.)
