Stream this: ‘Eurydice,’ Oakland Symphony
Here are some cool streaming options this week, from a look at a groundbreaking Sarah Ruhl play to musical offerings from the Oakland Symphony.
“Eurydice”: Pretty much any play by Sarah Ruhl is something special, but her evocative and poignant retelling of the Orpheus legend from the point of view of his wife is one of her best. City Lights Theater in San Jose staged the play last year as a bilingual work, combining English and American Sign Language in a production that Ruhl herself endorsed. Now City Lights is offering an online documentary on the making of the production that is available on its website through Aug. 15. Note, however, you have to reserve a viewing by Friday. Details: Free, but donations are encouraged; those who donate $10 or more can access an Aug. 27 Q&A with actors and American Sign Language interpreters Dane K. Lentz and Stephanie Foisy; cltc.org.
Oakland Symphony: The orchestra is offering recordings of past concerts, streaming a new performance at 6 p.m. each Friday. Coming this Friday is a March 17, 2017, concert featuring Anton Bruckner’s “Te Deum,” adapted from the Christian hymn, performed with the Oakland Symphony Choir. On Aug. 7, the orchestra will stream a March 18, 2016, concert featuring Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2. Details: Free, but donations encouraged; OaklandSymphony.org.
Jazz Off the Plazz: The Los Gatos Music and Arts summer music series has added to its virtual concert lineup, which now features streaming shows every Wednesday through Sept. 9. Performers include Los Angeles jazz mainstays John Storie and Alex Frank (best known for being part of Jeff Goldblum’s amazing Mildred Snitzer Orchestra (Wednesday); jazz/blues singer-songwriters Sara Niemietz and W.G. Snuffy Walden (Aug. 12) and Django Reinhardt revivalists Skyline Hot Club (Aug. 19). Details: 6p.m. Wednesdays; free but donations encouraged and local vendor promotional offers included; www.jazzontheplazz.com.
