1946: Hall of Famer Tony Lazzeri, son of San Francisco and Galileo High School, dies at 42 after a fall at his Millbrae home.

1948: Bob Mathias wins the decathlon at the London Olympics — at age 17!

1952: Satchel Paige, 46, becomes the oldest pitcher in major league history to pitch a complete game or a shutout — and he gets them both the hard way, going 12 innings to win 1-0.

1973: Roberto Clemente is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame seven months after his fatal mercy mission to Nicaragua. 1981: The A’s and three other teams — Yankees, Phillies and Dodgers — are declared first-half champions and the MLB season resumes after a sevenweek strike.,

1988: En route to becoming the first 40-40 man in MLB history, Jose Canseco steals second base to become the 11th player to hit 30 homers and steal 30 bases in a season.

1988: Rich Gossage becomes the second MLB pitcher with 300 saves, joining Rollie Fingers.

1990: Oakland’s own Joe Morgan and Jim Palmer are inducted into Baseball Hall of Fame.

1991: The perfectly named Debbie Doom pitches her second consecutiv­e perfect game for the U.S. at the Pan-Am Games.

1992: Carl Lewis leads a U.S. sweep in the long jump in the Olympics with a mark of 28 feet, 5 1-2 inches on his first attempt.

1994: Jeff Gordon wins the Brickyard 400, the first stock car race at the Indianapol­is Motor Speedway.

1999: Tony Gwynn singles in his first at-bat to become the 22nd major leaguer to reach 3,000 hits, then gets three more hits because he’s Tony Gwynn.

2002: Giants closer Robb Nen becomes the youngest player to record 300 saves. He’s 32, but his elbow is shot and his career ends two months later in Game 6 of the World Series.
