Rojas gets crucial hit to lead Marlins past deGrom, Mets

-

Miguel Rojas hit a tiebreaking RBI single during Miami’s four-run sixth inning against Jacob deGrom, and the Marlins beat the New York Mets 5-3 on Monday.

Garrett Cooper and Brian Anderson homered for Miami, which had dropped four in a row. Trevor Rogers pitched five effective innings for his first major league win, and Brandon Kintzler worked the ninth for his seventh save.

The loss was the first for deGrom (2-1), while the Mets lost their fourth consecutive game. Robinson Canó homered, and Jeff McNeil also had two hits and an RBI.

DeGrom, the two-time defending NL Cy Young Award winner, carried a two-hit shutout into the sixth. Cooper then got Miami on the board with a leadoff drive, and Matt Joyce reached on an error by first baseman Pete Alonso.

Joyce scored the tying run on Lewin Diaz’s one-out double, and Rojas’ two-out single brought home Diaz. Jorge Alfaro followed with an RBI double.

Only one of the four runs charged to deGrom was earned. The right-hander hadn’t allowed four runs in an inning since he gave up five runs in the second against Milwaukee on April 26, 2019. He actually lowered his ERA from 1.80 to 1.76.

Rogers (1-0) allowed five hits, struck out five and walked two in his second career start.

DeGrom faced the Marlins for the fourth straight start — the first time a pitcher has faced the same opponent four consecutive times since the New York Giants’ Freddie Fitzsimmons did so against the Cincinnati Reds in 1929.

RAYS 5, YANKEES 3 >> Tyler Glasnow flummoxed New York for six innings, Ji-Man Choi and Kevin Kiermaier homered off Gerrit Cole, and visiting Tampa Bay improved to 7-1 against New York this season and stretched its division cushion to 41/2 games.

MARINERS 2, ANGELS 1 >> Marco Gonzales retired 21 consecutive Angels while throwing a fourhitter, and Jose Marmolejos hit a tiebreaking homer in the sixth inning of Seattle’s win in Anaheim. Gonzales (4-2) had eight strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter until the ninth inning of his second career complete game.

ORIOLES 4, BLUE JAYS 3 (11 INNINGS) >> José Iglesias and Bryan Holaday had RBI doubles in the 11th inning for Baltimore, and Iglesias threw out the potential tying run at home plate as the Orioles broke a five-game losing streak. Iglesias’ leadoff hit, to deep left-center field, scored Anthony Santander, who started the inning at second base. Holaday then doubled to right field to drive in Iglesias. Both hits came off Toronto reliever Anthony Bass (2-2).

CARDINALS 7, REDS 5 >> Paul DeJong slugged his first career grand slam, helping Dakota Hudson (1-3) to his first win of the season as visiting St. Louis held on to beat Cincinnati. Hudson had a season-high seven strikeouts.

PHILLIES 8, NATIONALS 6 >> Spencer Howard (11) threw five effective innings, Rhys Hoskins homered and drove in three runs, and host Philadelphia beat Washington. Juan Soto hit a pair of two-run homers and Michael Taylor and Trea Turner also went deep for the defending World Series champions, who fell to 12-20.
