Let’s Fix Lunch!

-

Did you know our PRE-COVID lunch habits were the source of nearly 11 billion packaging waste items per year? Let’s use this time eating lunch at home to hit the reset button, give up plastic baggies and learn other simple planet-saving tips by reading this important little cookbook from Kat Nouri, the CEO of Emeryville-based Stasher. It lands Sept. 16.

Stasher makes reusable platinum-silicone bags, and Nouri’s cookbook, “Let’s Fix Lunch! Enjoy Delicious, Planet-friendly Meals at School, Work or On the Go” (Chronicle Books; $20), plugs the Earth-friendly products, of course. They go from freezer to microwave, oven and dishwasher, and each one keeps thousands of single-use plastics out of oceans and landfills.

But she’s also a busy mom of three and avid home cook who loves making quick and healthful meals. You’ll find 31 of those simple recipes, from on the go-snacks, like sesamecoconut granola and kuku sabzi (Persian herb frittata) to sandwiches such as chickpea waldorf salad on lavash and pesto chicken sandwich.

Ready to up your quarantine baking? Starting to think about holiday treats? Sarah Kieffer’s gorgeous second cookbook, “100 Cookies: The Baking Book for Every Kitchen, with Classic Cookies, Novel Treats, Brownies, Bars, and More (Chronicle Books; $27.50), has it all, including Kieffer’s penchant for pastry poetry. The book debuted Aug. 25.

The Saveur award-winning blogger and Minneapolis author of 2016’s “The Vanilla Bean Baking Book” got her start baking cookies in coffee shops. With this collection, she divides her cookie canon into eight comprehensive chapters, from The Classics and Fruit extravaganza to Time to Play (hello, tri-colored Neapolitan cookies).

There’s even a chapter on new recipes using Kieffer’s hashtag-famous, pan-banging ripple technique. In addition to the famous chocolate chip cookies with crispy, ripply edges and gooey, melty centers, you can now achieve the same effect with 11 other delectable recipes, including rocky road cookies and ginger molasses cookies.
