CAL AT WASHINGTON STATE

- — Jeff Faraudo

Records: Cal 1-3, 1-3 in Pac-12; Washington State 1-2, 1-2 in Pac-12

Kickoff: 1 p.m. today at Martin Stadium, Pullman, Wash.

TV: FOX

Radio: KGO (810 AM)

Series history: Cal leads 47-28-5. The Bears won 33-20 last year and have won 12 of the past 15 meetings.

Cal storylines: The Bears are coming off their first victory of the season, a 21-17 verdict over then-No. 21 Oregon. They have sorted out their defense the past two games, allowing an average of just 20.5 points to the Ducks and Stanford after giving up 32.5 in losses to UCLA and Oregon State . . . Cal needs to win here and in its final game, next Saturday against an undetermined opponent, to meet the Pac-12’s requirement of at least a .500 record for bowl eligibility. But actually landing a bowl bid is increasingly unlikely given that just four bowl games with links to the Pac-12 currently still are planning to play . . . While the Bears have made progress defensively, they rank last in the Pac-12 in total offense (319.5 yards) and still have not scored more than 27 points in a game under new coordinator Bill Musgrave.

Washington State storylines: The Cougars are coming off a 38-13 beatdown from USC last Sunday that was their first game since Nov. 14 after contests vs. Stanford and Washington were canceled due to COVID-19 issues. WSU trailed 28-0 in the first quarter as USC’s Kedon Slovis threw four touchdown passes to Amon-Ra St. Brown . . . Firstyear coach Nick Rolovich has brought his version of the run-and-shoot offense from his previous post at Hawaii, where he won 10 games last season. The Cougars are still a pass- oriented offense but Rolovich’s scheme incorporates run game the far more than ex-coach Mike Leach’s Air Raid attack . . . Freshman quarterback Jayden de Laura has started all three games but comes off a rough outing at USC where he threw two interceptions and averaged just 4.6 yards per pass attempt.

Cal roster updates: Starting offensive guard Valentino Daltoso has missed the past three games while in quarantine for COVID-19 and still had not been cleared as of Wednesday night. Likewise, freshman nose guard Stanley McKenzie has yet to play this season. Coach Justin Wilcox said both players are day-to-day. Wide receiver Trevon Clark, who did not play against Oregon last week, has been “excused” from the team to address a personal issue.

Washington State roster updates: Questionable to play is junior RB Max Borghi, a preseason first-team AllPac-12 pick, who has missed all three games after suffering back injury during training camp.

Matchup to watch: Cal secondary vs. WSU receivers. The Cougars’ Renard Bell leads the Pac-12 in receptions (27) while he and teammate Travell Harris are 1-2 in the receiving yards per game (98.0 and 91.7, respectively). Cal ranks third in the Pac-12 defending the pass, allowing just 196.8 yards per game through the air.

Stats that matter: Former WSU coach Mike Leach’s high- scoring teams averaged just 14.0 points the past three seasons against Cal teams coached by Justin Wilcox . . . WSU linebacker Jahad Woods, whose only other scholarship offer out of high school was from San Jose State, is the Pac-12’s active leader with 310 tackles . . . WSU placekicker Blake Mazza has made 24 of 25 field goals since the start of the 2019 season.
