One dead after string of shootings
GILROY >> Police are investigating a series of shootings over the New Year’s weekend, including a pair of attacks reported a couple days apart on the same street in which a man was killed, authorities said.
The first shooting under investigation occurred at about 8:10 p.m. Friday on Fairview Drive when officers were called for reports of gunshots, according to a news release from Gilroy police. They arrived to find several vehicles hit by bullets and evidence suggesting multiple shooters, but no gunshot victims or suspects were found in the area.
Police said they did impound a vehicle they associated with the shootings.
Then on Sunday at about 9:30 p. m., officers were called to the same street for another shooting, and found a 35-year- old man suffering from gunshot injuries. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he died, police said, adding that the shooters fled the area before officers got there.
The victim’s name was not immediately released pending his formal identification and notification of his next of kin by the Santa Clara County Medical ExaminerCoroner’s Office.
In the same news release, police said they were investigating a shooting reported ago about 9 p.m. Saturday near Santa Teresa Boulevard and Mantell Drive. Responding officers found a 21-year- old man they determined had been shot while driving. He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and was listed in critical condition.
No suspects in that attack had been publicly identified as of Monday, police said. There was no immediate indication from police that the Saturday shooting was related to the incidents on Fairview Drive.
