Bay Area’s Another Planet goes Hollywood
Another Planet Entertainment, the Berkeleybased producers of the Outside Lands festival and so many other events, is managing to stay busy during the lengthy hiatus in concerts due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Notably, APE’s management arm — Another Planet Management — announced Tuesday that it’s expanding into Los Angeles and will now manage such acts as Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench — both former members of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers — as well as Billy Idol, Cherry Glazerr, Miya Folick and Advertisement.
The move comes after Another Planet has acquired the Los Angeles-based Telegraph Road Management,which is helmed by Laurence Freedman.
Freedman, a longtime player in the music industry, will head Another Planet’s new Southern California office.
“With our teams combined, we’ll have access to a wider network to help inform what each of our clients are doing,” Freedman said. “With so many different avenues to take into consideration when managing artists, this should only be beneficial to
all involved.”
Another Planet Management founder Bryan Duquette is also happy to see this all come together.
“As the pandemic continued, I shifted my focus from the promoter side to growing the artist management company to further diversify Another Planet,” he says. “Los Angeles being a hub of our industry is a natural extension for our business strategically and Telegraph Road immediately gives us a footprint in that community to enhance the business of our existing clients along with the opportunity to sign new clients.”
The deal between Another Planet and Telegraph Road was orchestrated by Dan Kasin, who is the longtime general manager of Another Planet Management. The move brings together allies in the music business with a connection that has ties to late rock legend Tom Petty.
Freedman was a longtime associate of Petty’s manager, Tony Dimitriades, and his Telegraphy Road firm manages two former members of Petty’s Heartbreakers band — guitarist Mike Campbell (and his band The Dirty Knobs), and keyboardist Benmont Tench.
“For years I’ve known Laurence as a colleague and friend and over time he has become friendly with so many others here at APE,” he says. “It’s a natural fit. I look forward to combining forces so that we can grow our portfolio of artists by attracting new talent.”
Freedman has a long history with APE CEO Gregg Perloff, stretching back well before Another Planet even existed.
“I have had the pleasure to work with Laurence while he was with East End Management and Tony Dimitriades and he’s one of the best managers out there,” Perloff says. “Not only does he understand artists with careers that span decades, but he also has a great ear for developing artists in the contemporary space.”
