Busy Islanders have time to defeat Sabres

Mathew Barzal and Scott Mayfield each had a goal and an assist and the New York Islanders beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-2 on Saturday.

The Islanders are in a stretch in which they are scheduled to play 19 games in 33 days for the first time in franchise history. The Islanders are 5-0-1 thus far in this stretch, winning their last four games.

Semyon Varlamov made 20 saves as the Islanders improved to 9-0-2 at Nassau Coliseum this season.

New York beat Buffalo for the fifth straight time this season, outscoring the Islanders 19-7 in those five meetings.

PENGUINS 4, FLYERS 3 >> Jared Mccann pounced on a rebound and knocked it past Bryan Elliott with less than 10 minutes to go to lead Pittsburgh over Philadelph­ia.

PANTHERS 6, PREDATORS 2>> Noel Acciari scored three goals for his third career hat trick, and Florida picked up its second straight victory. Acciari, who began the day with no points in 14 games this season, scored twice in a three-goal second period as the Panthers took the lead for good.

RANGERS 6, DEVILS 3 >> Ryan Strome scored twice and the streaking New York sent New Jersey to a fifth straight loss and eighth in nine games. Adam Fox, Ryan Strome, Kevin Rooney Libor Hajek and Filip Chytil also scored as New York won its third straight and sixth in eight games.

CANADIENS 7, JETS 1 >> Brendan Gallagher scored twice in a four-goal second period as Montreal routed Winnipeg. Josh Anderson, Tyler Toffoli, Joel Armia, Paul Byron and Jeff Petry also scored, Tomas Tatar had three assists and Carey Price stopped 28 shots for the Canadiens.

CANUCKS 4, MAPLE LEAFS 2 >> Bo Horvat and J.T. Miller scored in a 42-second span in the third period and Vancouver beat the NHLleading Toronto Maple to sweep the two-game series. Brock Boeser added a goal and two assists for the Canucks.

COYOTES5,WILD2>> Tyler Pitlick scored twice, Conor Garlandhad­agoalandan assist, and Arizona rallied to beat Minnesota.

DUCKS 5, AVALANCHE 4, OT >> Anaheim rallied for two late goals and Ryan Getzlaf scored with winner in overtime.

STARS 5, BLUE JACKETS 0 >> Dallas’ Roope Hintz had a goal and an assist and Jake Oettinger made 20 saves for the shutout.

NOTES >> Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo was released from the hospital after spending the night following a “predatory” head hit from Capitals forward Tom Wilson, who received a seven-game suspension. ... The Blues activated fivetime 30-goal scorer Vladimir Tarasenko from injured reserve. He has not played after undergoing surgery on his left shoulder last August.
