Wish We Were There

The trip that I am really looking forward to is a trip to Ireland. I enjoy the breathtaking photos from “Ireland from my Lens, Photography by Liam Mcnamara” (www.facebook.com/irelandfrommylensphotography). The combination of history and natural wonders fascinates me. I love Irish music and storytelling too. — Mercedes Cohen, Richmond

WARSAW REVERIES

More than the pierogi and paczki — filled jelly doughnuts that we filled ourselves with — we miss the friendly people of Warsaw and the streets that wind into squares, like Old Town Market Square, a medieval square bustling with craft and food stands, people and school children on field trips. (It was) rebuilt after World War II and shares the history of a city ravaged. Its walls bear the concave impressions of bullets that penetrated their surfaces.

We miss hearing Chopin’s music on benches set up around Lazienki Park, where pressing a button releases the recording of one of his waltzes.

We miss learning about history and resilience, but most of all, we miss staying there for at least a month to see our oldest son and his wife and our dear almost-4-year-old granddaughter. We missed our 2020 spring trip, when our flight and reservations for our apartment were canceled because of COVID. Video calls are fine, but nothing compares to the cityscapes and long walks we would take, absorbing the beauty arising out of rubble, this wondrous Warsaw.
