cUPhRTINO >> Target will close two Bay Area stores in late June following a wide-ranging review of all of the company’s stores, the retailing giant said Tuesday.

An estimated 75 people work at the Target stores that are closing in the Bay Area — although eligible workers have the opportunity to transfer their jobs to another company store, according to Target.

The affected stores are in Cupertino at 19499 Stevens Creek Blvd., and San Francisco at 1830 Ocean Ave., the retailer said. They will close June 26, Target spokesperson Jacqueline DeBuse said.

The retailer intends to do what it can to place as many affected workers as possible in new Target locations.

“The decision to close a store is always difficult and follows a rigorous annual process to evaluate the performance of every store in the portfolio and maintain the overall health of the business,” DeBuse said.

About 35 people work at the Cupertino store and another 40 people work at the San Francisco store.

Despite these closures, Target is also opening new retail sites.

In 2020, Target opened 30 stores, creating more than 2,500 jobs. In 2021, Target is slated to open between 30 and 40 stores, creating thousands of jobs.

“Target remains committed to the San Francisco Bay Area and will continue to serve guests at nearby stores,” DeBuse said. Stores near the affected Cupertino site include a recently remodeled Target on De Anza Boulevard in Cupertino, San Jose Westgate, and Target stores in Sunnyvale and Santa Clara.
