Urias dominates as Dodgers shut out Mariners
Julio Urías enjoyed this trip to Seattle and performance against the Mariners way more than the last time he was on the same mound.
Urías (3-0) threw seven dominant innings of one-hit ball, striking out a career-high 11 and leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 1-0 win on Tuesday.
The matchup between early-season division leaders out West was an entertaining pitchers’ duel with Urías getting the better of Seattle’s Marco Gonzales. And it was a much different result than last summer, when Urías failed to make it out of the second inning in his only other start against the Mariners.
Urías said that uncharacteristic outing was a reminder to trust his pitches.
“I know that I have really good stuff, and to have confidence to attack the players, to attack the hitters and just trust that my stuff plays,” Urías said through a translator.
Seattle’s lone hit was Mitch Haniger’s slow infield single with two outs in the third inning.
NATIONALS 3, CARDINALS 2 >> Washington’s Yan Gomes drew a four-pitch walk from Giovanny Gallegos to force in the go-ahead run in an odd eighth inning that also featured St. Louis deploying a five-man infield, and the host Nationals came back to edge the Cardinals.
WHITE SOX 8, INDIANS 5 >> Carlos Rodón followed up his no-hitter by hanging around for five shaky innings to beat Cleveland for the second time in a week and José Abreu homered twice, leading visiting Chicago to a win. Rodón (3-0), pitching in short sleeves despite temperatures dropping into the 30s and snow on the way, worked around five walks, giving up a homer and throwing 110 pitches — only four fewer than in his gem on April 14.
YANKEES 3, BRAVES 1 >> The Yankees broke their five-game losing streak with little offense, getting a run-scoring wild pitch and bases-loaded walk from Atlanta reliever Nate Jones in the eighth inning in New York.
RED SOX 4, BLUE JAYS 2 >> Boston’s Xander Bogaerts hit a three-run home run to back Eduardo Rodríguez in his first start at Fenway Park since 2019. Rodríguez (3-0), who missed last season due to COVID-19 complications, allowed two runs on three hits over six innings and struck out six for AL East-leading Boston.
BETTS X-RAYS NEGATIVE >> Mookie Betts was out of the Dodgers lineup after getting hit on the right forearm a night earlier, but manager Dave Roberts doesn’t expect it to be a longterm issue. Roberts said X-rays on Betts’ arm were negative after he took a fastball from Seattle closer Rafael Montero on Monday.
