SAN JOSE >> Two people died in two traffic crashes over the weekend in San Jose, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A collision was reported at 10:41 p.m. Sunday on Highway 237 and Great America Parkway, CHP Officer Ross Lee said. CPR was being performed on one person by an off-duty paramedic when officers arrived and paramedics tried to continue CPR at the scene but the person was pronounced dead at 10:59 p.m.

An investigation revealed that two separate crashes occurred and that a man was standing on the right shoulder of 237 when a Honda Accord veered off-road and collided with a Honda Fit, which then struck the man.

The Honda Accord stopped in lanes two and three after the collision and was then struck by another car, Lee said. The driver of the Accord was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Another collision was reported at 2:47 a.m. Saturday on Highway 101 near Tully Road, according to Lee.

A yellow Mitsubishi was traveling on northbound 101 when it rear-ended a white van, causing the van to veer off the road and overturn, Lee said. The driver of the Mitsubishi got out of the car and was standing in the road when he was struck by a third car, a white Lexus.

The driver of the Mitsubishi was thrown into the median; he was pronounced dead at the scene, Lee said. The driver of the van was taken to a hospital.

All lanes of Highway 101 were closed; they reopened at 6:40 a.m.

The identities of the two people killed haven’t been released. Alcohol isn’t being considered a factor in either collision.
