SAN JOSE >> An 81-year-old man died from the injuries he suffered at the end of last month after a driver hit him while he was trying to cross the street, according to San Jose police.

The collision was reported Oct. 30 at 7:49 p.m. on McLaughlin Avenue north of Tully Road, police said. An investigation determined that a man was walking across McLaughlin between crosswalks when the driver of a 2007 Honda sedan hit him.

The man was taken to a local hospital, and he died Friday, police said. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office identified him as San Jose resident Surjit Ghumman.

Police said the Honda driver stopped at the scene and that there is no indication that he was driving impaired, or that he was cited or arrested.

The death marked the city’s 54th traffic death of the year and the 20th involving a pedestrian who died, according to data compiled by this news organization. San Jose had recorded 42 traffic fatalities at the same point in 2020.
