Series history: Stanford has won 11 straight against Oregon State, but the past two games have been close, decided by 39-yard field goals by Jet Toner. Toner made a kick with six seconds left in 2019 in a 31-28 win, and with 1:48 remaining last year in a 27-24 win.
Storylines: Two struggling teams meet at Reser Stadium. Stanford is coming off the worst loss of the David Shaw era, a 52-7 drubbing at home against Utah, while Oregon State lost in double overtime at Colorado for its third loss in four games. But while a four-game losing streak all but ended Stanford’s hopes of making a bowl game, Oregon State can secure its first bowl berth since 2013 with a win today. … With last year’s game moved because of COVID restrictions in Santa Clara County, this will be the third straight year that the teams meet in Corvallis. The Beavers are 4-0 at home this season.
Matchup to watch: Oregon State running game vs. Stanford run defense. Oregon State is 10th nationally at 229.9 rushing yards a game, paced by B.J. Baylor’s Pac-12 leading average of 107.8. Stanford ranks 127th out of 130 FBS teams in rushing yards allowed (232.1) and just gave up a David Shaw-era high 441 rushing yards against Utah.
Injuries/Absences: QB Tanner McKee will likely miss a second straight game with an undisclosed injury. Top CB Kyu Blu Kelly, OLB Stephen Herron and RB/ PR Casey Filkins have been ruled out. WR Elijah Higgins, WR John Humphreys, SS Kendall Williamson and RB E.J. Smith are questionable.
Stats that matter: Oregon State LB Avery Roberts has 103 tackles, which is fourth in the nation. … Stanford is 3-0 when it wins the turnover battle and 3-0 when it leads at halftime. … OSU kicker Everett Hayes made a 60-yard field goal to send last week’s game against Colorado to overtime, tied for the longest field goal in any conference game in Pac-12 history. … Stanford TE/DE Tucker Fisk started on both sides of the ball last week, the first Pac-12 player to do it since Stanford’s Owen Marecic in the 2011 Orange Bowl. … OSU converts third downs at a 52.3 percent clip, which ranks fourth nationally behind Coastal Carolina, Alabama and Ohio State.
