Fosse to be inducted into A’s Hall of Fame for Class of 2022

Ray Fosse, a catcher on two A’s World Series-winning teams who went on to become a popular and Emmy-winning broadcaste­r for more than 30 years, will be inducted into the A’s Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2022, the team announced Friday.

Fosse died Oct. 13 after a 16-year battle with cancer. He was 74.

Fosse, who won titles with the A’s in 1973 and 1974, will enter the Hall along with former A’s teammates Sal Bando and Joe Rudi as well as Eric Chavez, former director of Player Developmen­t Keith Lieppman, and longtime clubhouse manager Steve Vucinich.

Fosse served as an A’s color commentato­r from 1986-2021. He won an Emmy Award for Broadcasti­ng in 2003, and he was nominated for the Ford C. Frick Award in 2004.

He was named to the A’s 50th Anniversar­y Team in 2018.

SAINT MARY’S EDGES UC DAVIS >> Taycee Wedin scored 17 points while Ali Bamberger scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the Gaels’ 52-50 road win over the Aggies. Saint Mary’s trailed 50-49 until Wedin hit a winning 3-pointer with 16 seconds left. Brianna Simonich added 10 rebounds and four assists for Saint Mary’s.

CAL TOPS UNIVERSITY OF SAN FRANCISCO >> Jayda Curry led Cal with 27 points en route to a 70-41 win. Jadyn Bush grabbed 10 rebounds for the Bears. Ioanna

Olympics

ZHOU TAKES SECOND >> Japan’s Shoma Uno landed four quadruple jumps to win the NHK Trophy in Tokyo and bolster his prospects for the figure skating event at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

First after the short program, the Olympic silver medalist received 187.57 points for a personal-best total of 290.15. Palo Alto’s Vincent Zhou was second with 260.69 followed by South Korea’s Cha Junhwan with 259.60.

With Saturday’s win, Uno qualified for the Dec. 9-12 Grand Prix Final in Osaka.

Zhou, second after the short program, planned to open his routine with a quad lutz but could only manage a single. He recovered after that with four quad jumps but finished the free skate in sixth place with 161.18 points.

Zhou is the 2019 world bronze medalist and was coming off his first Grand Prix title at Skate America, where he upset favorite Nathan Chen.

JACKSON MAKES HISTORY AGAIN >> One day after becoming the first Black American woman to win a World Cup speedskati­ng race, Erin Jackson made it two in a row. The 29-yearold from Ocala, Fla., won the second 500-meter race at the season-opening meet in Poland, breaking her 24-hour-old track record with a time of 37.555 seconds.

Jackson made history Friday in the first 500 race, taking the top spot in 37.613. In both races, she defeated defending Olympic champion Nao Kodaira of Japan, who took second in the first 500 and settled for third in the second race.

The United States picked up another gold when twotime Olympian Brittany Bowe won the women’s 1,000 in 1 minute, 14.786 seconds, more than a halfsecond ahead of runner-up Miho Takagi of Japan.

Tennis

PAUL WINS STOCKHOLM OPEN >> Tommy Paul won his first career ATP Tour event, defeating Denis Shapovalov of Canada 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 at the Stockholm Open in Stockholm, Sweden.

The 24-year-old New Jersey native excelled on second serve points won, converting at 61 percent (23 of 38) compared to 41 percent for his opponent.

Shapovalov, who won his first career championsh­ip at this tournament in 2019, connected on 70 percent on first serves but was saddled with 28 unforced errors. BADOSA STRETCHES STREAK >> Paula Badosa extended her winning streak to eight matches with a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over Maria Sakkari as she inched closer to the final four at the WTA Finals.

The 23-year-old from Spain will qualify in first place from her group if Aryna Sabalenka beats Iga Swiatek in the late match. Badosa could also advance, with the final position to be determined, if Swiatek prevails in three sets.

Golf

FURYK LEADS AFTER THREE ROUNDS >> Jim Furyk shot a 6-under 65 to take the thirdround lead in the Charles Schwab Cup Championsh­ip, putting him in position to win the PGA Tour Champions season points title.

Furyk started the round three behind leader Kirk Triplett and quickly made

up ground with an eagle on the par-5 first hole at Phoenix Country Club. Furyk closed out his day with a bogey-free round that put at 16 under — one ahead of Triplett, who shot 69. Furyk can win his first Schwab Cup with a victory or with a high finish and if Bernard Langer falters.

KORDA, THOMPSON SHARE LEAD >> Nelly Korda shot a 7-under 63 that gave her a share of the lead with Lexi Thompson in the Pelican Women’s Championsh­ip in Belleair, Florida.

Thompson did her part with a 65 that allowed her to join Korda at 16-under 194, with no shortage of contenders right behind them heading into the final round.

Soccer

FRANCE, BELGIUM QUALIFY FOR WORLD CUP >> Striker Kylian Mbappe scored four goals as defending champion France qualified for next year’s World Cup by crushing Kazakhstan 8-0 in Paris.

Belgium booked its place at next year’s World Cup with a 3-1 win over Estonia in Europe Group E play.
