Giants’ Jones practices despite a neck injury

-

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones practiced on a limited basis despite a strained neck and he hopes to play this weekend against the Dolphins in Miami.

“I think it’s just sore,” Jones said Wednesday after a short workout. “Like I said, I’m feeling much better today and expect I’ll continue to feel better and better every day.”

Concern about Jones’ playing status blew up Tuesday night when it was reported he sustained a neck injury in a win over the Eagles on Sunday and there was a chance he might miss a game.

It was somewhat surprising because Jones did not appear to be hurt in the 13-7 win. He didn’t miss any snaps and he also took part in the post-game news conference.

Jones said he woke up early Monday because his neck hurt. Coach Joe Judge added he was not told at any time during the game that Jones was hurt. He found out Monday when he got a copy of the injury report. Players had Tuesday off.

Jones has been the Giants’ starting quarterback since the third game of his rookie season in 2019 when he replaced two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning. Jones has started every game this season.

CAN FIELDS RETURN BY SUNDAY FOR BEARS ? >> While Justin Fields returned to practice for the Chicago Bears, Andy Dalton got the first-team snaps on Wednesday.

Whether the prized rookie or veteran will start at quarterback Sunday when the NFC West-leading Arizona Cardinals visit Soldier Field remains to be seen.

“With Andy being able to come out here and get these reps today, it’ll allow us to really continue each day to see, ‘Justin, where you at?’” coach Matt Nagy said.

Fields had not practiced since he cracked ribs in the loss to Baltimore on Nov. 21 and was replaced by Dalton. The three-time Pro Bowler led a late go-ahead scoring drive before the Ravens pulled it out and, with a short turnaround, started in a Thanksgiving victory at winless Detroit. SEAHAWKS ADD PETERSON TO PRACTICE SQUAD >> Desperate for depth at running back, the Seattle Seahawks signed 36-year-old Adrian Peterson to their practice squad on Wednesday.

There’s no guarantee Peterson will be added to Seattle’s active roster ahead of Sunday’s game against San Francisco, but with Chris Carson out for the season, and Rashaad Penny and Travis Homer missing last Monday’s game with injuries, the Seahawks opted to add the veteran to bolster their depth.

TEXANS CANCEL PRACTICE OVER ILL PLAYERS >> The Houston Texans canceled practice and all other inperson activities Wednesday on the advice of their medical team because some players weren’t feeling well. Coach David Culley said they have not had any positive COVID-19 tests.

Culley, speaking to reporters via Zoom, said that the team would resume normal operations today. COWBOYS’ HILL HAS SUSPENSION REDUCED TO ONE GAME >> Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Trysten Hill’s suspension for punching Las Vegas offensive lineman John Simpson after a Thanksgiving Day loss to the Raiders was reduced to one game from two.
