Dancing all over the Bay Area
Here are three shows dance fans should know about. Camille A. Brown and Dancers: The New York choreographer, dancer and director made headlines last year when it was announced she will be the first Black woman in more than 60 years to direct and choreograph a Broadway show, which she will do with a spring 2022revival of “for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf.” In the meantime, she is brining her company, known for applying a distinctively theatrical style to such contemporary themes as race and identity, to San Jose. The shows will be available live and through streaming. Details: 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday; Hammer Theatre Center, San Jose; $45-$60($25streaming); hammertheatre.com.
Smuin Contemporary Ballet: The troupe’s new touring program, “Dance Series 1, Love Smuin” features a company premiere of Gina Patterson’s ode to loss and perseverance “You Are Here” (set to music by Ludovico Einaudi), as well as revivals of two works by Amy Seiwert, “Dear Miss Cline” (referencing country music legend Patsy Cline) and “Been Through Diamonds.” Details: Friday through Feb. 13 at Cowell Theatre at San Francisco’s Fort Mason complex, Feb. 18-19at Walnut Creek’s Lesher Center for the Arts, Feb. 24-27at Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts; $25-$99; www.smuinballet.org.
Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo: A delectable and finely calibrated mix of the ridiculous and the sublime, Les Trocks return to UC Berkeley’s Zellerbach Hall with irresistible works such as “ChopEniana” (music by Frédéric Chopin) and “Go for Barocco” (music by J.S. Bach). Far more than a drag show, the company features male ballerinos who are both stellar dancers and inspired comedians. Details: Presented by Cal Performances; 8p.m. Friday and Saturday; $35-$104; calperformances.org.
