Cardinals cornerback Gladney dies in car crash

-

Jeff Gladney, a defensive back for the NFL's Arizona Cardinals, died Monday in a car crash in Dallas. He was 25.

Gladney's death was confirmed by the Cardinals and his agent.

“We are devastated to learn of Jeff Gladney's passing. Our hearts go out to his family, friends and all who are mourning this tremendous loss,” the team said.

The crash occurred on the service road of Woodall Rodgers Freeway in Dallas, KTVT-TV reported. Another person also died.

The Dallas County sheriff's department said no one was available on the Memorial Day holiday to talk about the crash.

Gladney played at TCU before becoming a 2020 first-round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings. He played in 16 games that year but was released before the 2021 season, when he was charged with assaulting a woman.

Gladney was found not guilty in Dallas County, Texas, in March and was subsequently signed by the Cardinals. He participated in team drills last week.

“We are asking prayers for the family and privacy at this most difficult time,” agent Brian Overstreet said.

The NFL said Gladney's death was a “tragic loss.”

RANGERS BEAT HURRICANES IN GAME 7 >> The Rangers completed a rally from a 3-1 series deficit with a 6-2 win over the Hurricanes in Game 7 of a second-round series on Monday at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C.

The Hurricanes lost goalie Antti Raanta with 4:23 left in the second period with New York leading 2-0. The Rangers dominated from wire-to-wire, scoring twice in the first period before Raanta left with his lower body injury.

The Rangers added four more goals against backup Pyotr Kochetkov, who quickly gave up a goal to the Rangers' Ryan Strome that allowed New York to carry a 3-0 lead into the third period.

Raanta was injured after he extended his right leg in a split to make a stop. He almost immediately went forward and landed face down on the ice. He was eventually helped back to the bench with assistance from teammates Vincent Trocheck and Nino Niederreiter.

SWIATEK DROPS SET, ADVANCES ANYWAY >> Iga Swiatek's 20-set winning streak ended. Doesn't matter, because her run of consecutive match victories is now up to 32.

The No. 1-ranked Swiatek shook off an uncharacteristically problematic stretch and came back to beat 19-year-old Zheng Qinwen of China 6-7 (5), 6-0, 6-2 Monday in the fourth round at Roland Garros.

Swiatek, the 2020 French Open champion, took leads of 3-0 and 5-2 in the first set but couldn't close it out, wasting five set points in all. In the tiebreaker, Swiatek claimed five consecutive points to lead 5-2 — and the 74th-ranked Zheng responded by reeling off the next five points.

That was the first set ceded by Swiatek since April 23.

MEDVEDEV BOWS OUT >> It took until the fourth round, but now it's the high-seeded men who are exiting the French Open.

No. 2 Daniil Medvedev bowed out with a 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 loss to No. 20 Marin Cilic in a matchup between two past U.S. Open champions at Court Philippe Chatrier on Monday night.

Medvedev joins No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas, last year's runner-up, on the way out of the bracket. Tsitsipas lost to unseeded 19-year-old Dane Holger Rune earlier Monday.

While only three of the top 10 women's seeds got to the round of 32 at this year's French Open, all of the top 12 men did. And all of the top eight men were in the fourth round.

Medvedev is the reigning U.S. Open champion but had been 0-4 at Roland Garros until getting to the quarterfinals a year ago. This time, he won every set he played until running into Cilic, the 2014 U.S. Open champion, who is now into his third quarterfinal in 16 appearances in Paris.

HAMLIN WINS COCA-COLA 600 >> This was the one race Denny Hamlin has been dreaming about.

Hamlin finally got the win he has coveted for the last 17 years, holding off Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch in overtime Sunday night to win the longest — and perhaps wildest — Coca-Cola 600 in history.

Hamlin won for the 48th time in the Cup Series, and for the time in a points race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

“It is so special. That is the last big one that is not on my resume,” said Hamlin, who has won the Daytona 500 and the Southern 500 three times each and the All-Star Race. “We weren't very good all day, but got ourselves in the right place at the right time.”

Car owner Joe Gibbs said he knew this was an important win for Hamlin.

“With Denny to race that hard and that long and to be here and know how important this race is right here in our backyard, this is just a huge deal,” Gibbs said.

NASCAR's longest and most grueling race lasted more than five hours and took 619 miles to complete. There were 18 caution flags and 16 drivers failed to finish.
