You Are What You Drive — A Bottom Line Review

The Bottom Line: What is a M4 Comp? The M4 Comp is a high performance car from BMW. BMW, which stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke, and translates to Bavarian Motor Works, is owned by the parent company, BMW Group. BMW also owns luxury auto brands Mini and Rolls Royce, and has its headquarters in Munich, Germany.

The 2022 BMW M4 Competition xDrive Convertible is all about sporty flair with its coupe-like lines, driver focused interior, sports car style, and is equipped with BMW’s impressive M xDrive system as standard equipment. This AWD all wheel drive technology automatically distributes torque to all 4 wheels with settings that can be selected by the driver. Depending on driving conditions, and personal style, the M xDrive can be set to 4WD 4 wheel drive, 4WD Sport, and 2WD modes.

The M4 Competition coupe starts at $74,700 while the M4 convertible starts at $86,300. BMW’s “xDrive” all wheel drive system is standard on the convertible, and it’s a $4,100 option on the coupe. Both come with the 503 HP version of the standard M4 engine and an 8 speed automatic transmission.

This week BMW sent me a 2022 BMW M4 Comp xDrive Convertible to test drive and review. The base window sticker price for the M4 Comp convertible is $86,300. The options on the press car are: the metallic paint for $550, the Kyalami orange and black leather interior for $2,550, the driver assistance package for $1,700, the parking assistance package for $800, the executive package for $1,350, the M drive professional package for $900, the carbon fiber trim package for $950, the neck warmer package for $650, the front ventilated seats for $350, the M drivers package for $2,500, and the M carbon exterior trim package for $4,700.

The MSRP manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including the $995 destination charge, is: $104,295. After adding in the state and local sales tax, plus the DMV and dealer fees, the total out the door and in your garage purchase price

came to: $117,332. Not cheap by any means, but a fantastic driver’s car with all the M options. Drop the top and you’re in heaven.

When you’re over $100K on the window sticker you’re in the upper luxury class, and this car has all the M performance options on it, plus it’s a convertible. There are very few cars sold at this price and performance level. Think Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Lexus.

The BMW M4 is a high performance version of the BMW 4 Series coupes and convertibles developed by BMW’s Motorsport division, BMW M, and marketed since 2014. The M4 matches the performance of supercars from not long ago, hitting 62 mph in 4.1 sec and reaching 155 mph. The most impressive figure is a 0 to 100 mph time of 8.6 sec. The latest generation of the M3 and M4 cars are very fast to say the least.

To get there the motor in the M4 Competition xDrive Convertible is a 3.0L liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo inline 6 cylinder gasoline engine delivering 503 HP horsepower and 479

pound-feet of torque. Then it’s bolted to an 8 speed STEPTRONIC automatic transmission with xDrive AWD all wheel drive, and sent into an M Sport differential.

Traction is controlled by M Driving Dynamics using an active M Drive suspension system. Add in Dynamic brakes, Dynamic cornering, Dynamic stability and Dynamic ABS anti-locking disc brakes and you have the ability to drive the car like a Formula One race car driver on a Sunday afternoon. The car knows what to do before you do, to make every road trip as fast and safely as possible, and that’s why it has M4 Comp in its name.

The list of options and upgrades are over 45 lines long on the window sticker. The standouts are the Isle of Man Green metallic paint and pumpkin orange and black leather interior, with brushed aluminum and carbon fiber trim. Add in the M sport leather wrapped steering wheel, paddle shifters and fingertip digital, radio and dashboard controls, to the red M seat belts and neck warmers. This model is the top of the line in luxury high performance cruisers, and with over 500 HP on tap, it’s one of the fastest too.

When you’re ready to buy a new high performance convertible, the 2022 BMW M4 should be on your ride and drive list, as it’s one of the best high performance convertibles for sale today. Call, click or visit your local BMW dealer for a test drive, and a Bottom Line price review, on the 2022 BMW M4 Comp xDrive Convertible. And remember that the base price for a new M4 starts at only $72,000. BMW - The Ultimate Driving Machine.
