How can I advance my career in the corporate world?
There are several things you need to do to advance your career in a corporate environment. First, you need to be a team player. Get along well with your co-workers; be likeable. You can succeed at this by being helpful, having their backs and not talking badly about anyone or the company. In doing so, you should also emerge as a natural leader by going the extra mile. Come up with solutions to streamline processes — even something as little as instituting a bagel breakfast every Friday can help you stand out.
Next, you need to toot your own horn; don’t expect your boss to do it. Visibility is critical to advancing in corporate America. At a startup, you’re typically more visible, since there are fewer employees than at a corporation. But if you don’t go out of your way to connect with leaders in a corporation, it likely won’t happen naturally. Put in face time with your boss, and be sure to mention the projects you’re working on and the progress you’re making. Arrive early at meetings and company functions so you can mingle with the higher-ups. Cultivate strong relationships with coworkers and leaders alike.
Regarding job expectations, there may be more red tape and protocol in a corporation than a startup. When you first start your job, bring the job description with you from your interview, and set specific goals with your boss. Ask what it takes to succeed and what is expected of you. The more clarity you gain going into your job, the easier it will be for you to navigate and advance.
