Millbrae councilman says he was hurt in weekend attack while at Lands End

A Millbrae city councilman said he was injured in a violent attack while visiting San Francisco's Lands End.

In a social-media post, Anders Fung said he and his family were visiting the landmark public park Saturday when two males wearing hooded sweatshirts threw a concrete block from overhead, hitting him in his head.

“When my family confronted the perpetrators demanding them to stop, one of them gave my family an obscene hand gesture before fleeing the crime scene,” said Fung.

Fung was taken to California Pacific Medical Center, where staff found herniation of a cervical disc, as well as a two-inch laceration they were able to stitch up. “The pain is severe, but I am expected to have a full recovery,” he said.

U.S. Park Police officers responded to the incident, and were working to find and identify the suspects, Fung said.

“As a community, public safety is paramount to our collective success,” Fung said in his post Sunday. “We must stand firm against all senseless violence and hate. Our people deserve a safe living environment.”

Fung has helped to organize rallies to support Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders against hateful acts, including a rally last year in San Mateo's Central Park, and previously sent an open letter to the San Mateo County board of supervisors calling for declaration of all racially motivated attacks as hate crimes.

“We have to take a zero tolerance approach toward crimes that are racially motivated,” Fung said at the time.
