You Are What You Drive — A Bottom Line Review

The Bottom Line: What is an AMG GT 53? The AMG GT 53 is a 4 door high performance luxury sport sedan with the good looks of a 2 door sport coupe, built and sold by Mercedes Benz. Mercedes Benz, commonly referred to as Mercedes, is a German luxury automotive brand. Both Mercedes Benz and Mercedes Benz AG are headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany. Mercedes Benz produces luxury and high performance cars and SUVs, and builds and sells light, medium, and heavy duty commercial trucks worldwide.

Who is AMG? AMG is an entirely separate company from Mercedes Benz. They have since become a huge part of Mercedes Benz history, going from a private company which modified and tuned customers Mercedes Benz vehicles, to winning motorsport races, and now being a fully fledged high performance department within Mercedes Benz.

What is Mercedes’ brand promise? Mercedes Benz promises to deliver “the best or nothing” through everything they do. Mercedes Benz vows to be the best in every aspect of its vehicles, this includes innovation, performance, design, safety and environment.

This week Mercedes Benz sent me a 2022 AMG GT 53 sport sedan with a base window sticker price of $102,600 to test drive and review. The options on the test car are: metallic paint for $750, the black Napa leather interior for $2,990, a AMG leather wrapped steering wheel for $500, the cabin air balance package for $350, a set of 20” AMG multi-spoke black alloy wheels for $1,050, the AMG performance exhaust system for $1,850, a 115 volt power outlet for $115, the yellow seat belts for $500, the AMG adjustable seats for $700, the AMG performance seats for $2,500, the rear bench seat for $1,000, the AMG light display for $250, the black microfiber headliner for $1,600, the driver assistance package for $1,950, the AMG night exterior trim package for $750, the acoustic interior comfort package for $1,100, and the extended night package for $550.

The total MSRP manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including the $1,050 destination charge, is: $122,155. After adding in the state and local sales tax, plus the DMV and dealer fees, the total out the door and in your garage purchase price came to: $137,424.

The price puts this AMG GT 53 in the high performance super luxury class, and as a GT grand touring sedan, it has the ability to cruise the autobahn at a top speed of 174 MPH, and can reach 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. It has more than enough power to take you and your friends for a quick trip to Costco, and then back to the country club for brunch.

The 2022 Mercedes Benz AMG GT 53 sedan engine makes 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque from a 3L liter supercharged, intercooled and turbocharged, inline 6 cylinder engine, coupled to a 9 speed automatic transmission. It combines the performance and handling of the GT cars, with 4 doors and a rear seat, so that you can share your high speed adventures with all of your family and close friends.

After power comes comfort and control, and the AMG GT 53 does not disappoint. Lots of Nappa leather inside, power everything, dual zone climate control, multi colored ambient lighting, AMG illuminated door sills, keyless entry, keyless GO, keyless start, Bluetooth, dual 12.3” touch screen and widescreen digital instrument displays, MB navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, voice control, wireless charging, a Burmester premium surround sound system with a 640 watt amplifier and 10 actively driven loudspeakers, power heated front seats with lumbar support and memory, a power rear liftgate and an AMG high performance leather wrapped steering wheel.

Safety and security starts with Mercedes Benz emergency call center backed by 24 hour roadside assistance service. Then add in the advanced airbag protection system, the anti theft alarm system, the anti lock ABS system, braking assist system, electronic stability program, active brake assist, blind spot assist, car to X communication, a rear view camera, active parking assist, LED daytime running lamps, active LED headlamps, LED tail lamps, and the rear LATCH child restraint system, just to name the big options.

So, when you’re ready to buy a new high performance luxury midsize sedan, the 2022 Mercedes Benz AMG GT 53 should be on your ride and drive list, as it’s one of the best high performance luxury GT cars for sale today.
