Newhook scores on birthday to lead Avalanche past Blues

Alex Newhook scored on his birthday for the second straight season, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the St. Louis Blues 4-2 on Saturday for their seventh win in eight games.

Evan Rodrigues, J.T. Compher and Matt Nieto also scored for Colorado, and Logan O'Connor had two assists. Alexandar Georgiev stopped 26 shots.

The Avalanche had won six in a row before Thursday night's 5-3 loss to lowly Anaheim. But the reigning Stanley Cup champions bounced back nicely in their final game before their bye week and the NHL All-Star break.

The banged-up Avalanche (27-18-3) could get some key players back after they return. Defensemen Josh Manson and Bowen Byram have been sidelined with lowerbody injuries, but they have started skating in non-contact jerseys.

Ivan Barbashev and Brayden Schenn scored for St. Louis (23-24-3) in its fourth consecutiv­e loss. Jordan Binnington made 27 saves.

PANTHERS 4, BRUINS 3 (OT) >>

Sam Reinhart scored 17 seconds into overtime to cap a late scoring flurry and give host Florida a victory over NHL-leading Boston. After David Pastrnak put the Bruins in front with 48.6 seconds left in regulation, Florida captain Aleksander Barkov tied it with 2.4 seconds remaining. The Panthers won for the first time this season when trailing going into the third period of a game. Florida had been 0-17-1 in such situations while the Bruins were 260-1 when leading after the first 40 minutes. The Panthers got goals from Brandon Montour and Sam Bennett.

LIGHTNING 5, KINGS 2 Brayden Point had a goal and an assist and host Tampa Bay won its franchise-record 12th consecutiv­e home game. Victor Hedman, Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, Corey Perry and Ross Colton also scored for Tampa Bay, which has won three in a row overall. The Lightning surpassed the franchise mark of 11 straight home wins set in 2019-20. Jaret Anderson-Dolan and Phillip Danault scored for the Kings.

FLYERS 4, JETS 0 >> Carter Hart made 40 saves for his first shutout of the season for visiting Philadelph­ia. Noah Cates had a goal and an assist, Kieffer Bellows, Owen Tippett and Tony DeAngelo also scored and Rasmus Ristolaine­n added two assists for the Flyers, who are 7-1-1 in their last nine road games. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 26 shots for the Jets before being relieved by David Rittich. Rittich made three saves.

SENATORS 5, CANADIENS 0 >> Claude Giroux scored twice and added an assist for host Ottawa. With the win the Senators are riding a threegame winning streak. Alex DeBrincat, Mathieu Joseph and Derick Brassard also scored for Ottawa, while Anton Forsberg was solid making 28 saves. Sam Montembeau­lt stopped 31 shots Montreal.

ISLANDERS 2, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 1 (OT) >> Mathew Barzal scored his 12th of the season at 4:28 of the overtime period to lift host New York. Assists went to Anthony Beauvillie­r and Adam

Pelech. Anders Lee gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead at 3:52 of the second period, but William Carrier tied the score for the Golden Knights at 16:08.
