Osman makes all seven 3s, propels Cavs past Clippers

-

Cedi Osman tied his career high with 29 points while making all seven of his shots from behind the arc and the host Cleveland Cavaliers built a 40-point lead on their way to a 12299 rout of the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday night.

All-Star starter Donovan Mitchell had 11 points in his return for Cleveland after missing three games with a strained groin. The Cavaliers never trailed and took their largest lead of the season at 82-42 on Jarrett Allen's first 3-pointer since Nov. 5, 2021.

The Clippers had won five in a row. They opted not to dress forward Kawhi Leonard and guards Paul George and Reggie Jackson, all of whom played Saturday in a victory in Atlanta. Officially, George and Leonard were reported as being out because of right knee trouble and Jackson has a sore right Achilles.

Turkey national team member Osman made 11 of 13 shots on Turkish Heritage Night at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

Brandon Boston Jr. scored 24 points and Moses Brown had 13 points and 16 rebounds for Los Angeles. GRIZZLIES 112, PACERS 100 >> Ja Morant had 27 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds, Jaren Jackson Jr. added 28 points and host Memphis overcame a lackluster first half. Brandon Clarke had 13 points, hitting all five of his shots as Memphis snapped a five-game losing streak. It was Morant's fifth tripledouble of the season and second in a row. Benedict Mathurin, the sixth pick in the 2022 draft, led the Pacers with 27 points and eight rebounds. Aaron Nesmith had 16 points and Myles Turner added 15. HORNETS 122, HEAT 117 >> Terry Rozier scored 31 points, P.J. Washington had 27 and host Charlotte stopped Miami's three-game win streak. LaMelo Ball scored 13 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter for the Hornets. Gordon Hayward was a perfect 7 of 7 from the field for 20 points. Jimmy Butler scored 28 points for the Heat, and Tyler Herro had 24.

BUCKS 135, PELICANS 110 >> Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 50 points for host Milwaukee in a game in which the Bucks led 37-19 after one quarter. Antetokounmpo shot 20 of 26 — 3 of 4 from deep — and also grabbed 13 rebounds. Jrue contributed 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists for Milwaukee. New Orleans got 18 points and six assists from Jose Alvarado and 16 points from Trey Murphy III. REFEREES ADMIT THEY GOOFED >> The National Basketball Referees Association said Sunday that LeBron James was fouled on the last play of regulation in the Los Angeles Lakers' game against the Boston Celtics.

The NBA office also confirmed for the second time that a foul should have been called.

“Like everyone else, referees make mistakes,” the union wrote in its tweet. “We made one at the end of last night's game and that is gut-wrenching for us. This play will weigh heavily and cause sleepless nights as we strive to be the best referees we can be.”

James got the ball about 35 feet from the basket, with 4.1 seconds remaining in what was a tied game at Boston on Saturday night. He split two defenders as he got into the lane, then went airborne and got past Jayson Tatum as well.

James laid the ball up with his left hand, Tatum clearly made contact with James' shooting arm, no foul was called and the game went to overtime. Had a foul been called, James would have gone to the free-throw line with an opportunity to put the Lakers ahead with 1.8 seconds remaining.

The Celtics wound up winning the game in overtime, 125-121.
