- By Darren Sabedra and Joseph Dycus

The good times haven't stopped for the San Mateo girls basketball team, which, under former South San Francisco coach Paul Carion, has done some special things this season — including winning its first league title since 1977. The season's not over yet. San Mateo won its 20th consecutive game Saturday, edging No. 6 seed Santa Clara 51-50 in overtime in the second round of the Central Coast Section Division II playoffs.

Bella Fong led San Mateo (22-3) with 27 points, including 10 in the third quarter, seven in the fourth and six in overtime.

Nina Llamas scored 14 points to lead Santa Clara, which finished 19-6. San Mateo advances to play at third-seeded Christopher in Tuesday's quarterfinals.

NO. 6 FREMONT-SUNNYVALE 55, LEIGH 47 >> Fremont's seniors led the way in the second round of the Division I playoffs. Anusha Chadalavada scored 20 points, and Haley Johnson put in 15. Fremont (13-12) plays at No. 3 Alisal on Tuesday.

NO. 11 LELAND 50, NO. 6 GUNN 47 >> Playing in its first game since a postgame brawl between adults on Tuesday, host Gunn was edged by Leland in a Division II second round game. ST. PATRICK-ST. VINCENT 42, CARDINAL NEWMAN 37 >> St. Patrick-St. Vincent didn't get any favors from the North Coast Section selection committee. A 17-win regular-season that included three losses to Northern California's top-ranked team, Salesian, merited only a No. 10 seed in the Division II bracket for the Vallejo private school.

That was bad news for Cardinal Newman, which won 25 regularseason games and beat Washington-Fremont in the first round of NCS. But after its upset, SPSV is now one win away from the final and a spot in the Northern California regionals. The Bruins on Wednesday travel to face Benicia, a 51-37 winner over American. NO. 6 BENICIA 51, NO. 14 AMERICAN 37 >> American, the 14th-seeded team that shocked third-seeded Redwood in the first round, fell on the road against Benicia. Jackdan Eyike scored 10 points to lead Benicia (20-10). Kiratraj Sanghera had 15 points and Jordan Bucko had 10 for American (18-10).

NO. 4 MOREAU CATHOLIC 56, NO. 5 ALAMEDA 51 >> Jalen Arnold had 12 points and Dominic Walker and Andrew Placido each scored nine to lead host Moreau past Alameda in a quarterfinal game. The Mariners play top-seeded Montgomery-Santa Rosa on Wednesday.
