Help us select our high school Athletes of the Week

Welcome to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News and East Bay Times) girls and boys Athlete of the Week poll.

For the entire academic year, we will provide a list of candidates who stood out over the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner.

This week, we consider performanc­es from Feb. 26-March 2.

Polls can be found on our websites — mercurynew­s.com/sports/highschool-sports/ or eastbaytim­es. com/sports/high-school-sports/ — where voting closes at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Vote as many times as you'd like until then without using bots or any other artificial methods of voting. Winners are announced each Friday online and in the print edition of the Mercury News and East Bay Times sports sections. Candidates for future Athlete of the Week polls can be nominated at highschool­s@bayareanew­sgroup. com.

We accept nomination­s until 11 a.m. each Monday. We also review stats submitted to MaxPreps by coaches/ team statistici­ans.

On to the nominees:

GIRLS Annie Bui, Washington-Fremont track and field:

Bui, a senior won the 100-meter hurdles event at the Dan Gabor Meet after running it in 17.27 seconds. She also finished sixth in the 300-meter hurdles event.

Megan Elgaaen, Sequoia lacrosse:

Elgaaen, a junior, scored four goals in a 15-5victory over Notre Dame-Belmont. She also scored two goals against Gunn, and had five assists across the two games.

Megan Haniger, Archbishop Mitty soccer:

Haniger, a senior, led the Archbishop Mitty back line as the Monarchs held Del Oro scoreless in regulation and overtime of the NorCal Division I title game. Mitty beat Del Oro 5-3in penalty kicks.

Olivia Hurtado, Freedom softball:

Hurtado, a junior, started her season off strong by hitting a home run in each of her first two games. Hurtado drove in five runs and drew a walk. Hurtado batted .284and hit two home runs last season.

Savannah Jones, Bishop O'Dowd basketball:

Jones, a senior point guard, scored 19 points as the Dragons defeated Oak Ridge to advance to the NorCal Division I title game. Jones also made major contributi­ons to O'Dowd's playoff victories over St. Francis and St. Ignatius in earlier rounds.

Katia Nesper, The King's Academy softball:

Nesper, a sophomore, had 27total strikeouts in victories over Leigh and Presentati­on last week. She also had three hits, one being a home run, and three RBI in the victory over Presentati­on.

Avery Provenzano, Notre DameSan Jose softball:

Provenzano, a pitcher, struck out 11and gave up just two hits in a five-inning shutout against Pioneer. She also struck out seven in an eight-inning victory over Gunn.

Daijha Teague, Oakland basketball:

Teague, a senior, scored a team-high 16 points as the Wildcats beat Woodland Christian 57-40to advance to the NorCal Division V final. Teague was named all-OAL last season and led the Wildcats to the section title game this season.

Keshia Vitalicio, Carondelet basketball:

Vitalicio, a senior, made eight straight free throws in overtime to help the Cougars defeat McClatchy and advance to the NorCal Division I title game. The senior point guard will play at Lehigh in the fall.

Vanessa Zamora, Mission San Jose softball:

Zamora, a freshman, had two hits, scored five runs and drove in four teammates in Mission San Jose's 21-2victory over San Lorenzo. The freshman also had a stolen base.

BOYS Aiden Chen, Saratoga baseball:

Chen pitched a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over Monta Vista. He struck out 17batters and was 3for 6at the plate with a triple.

Will Corbett, Bellarmine basketball:

Corbett scored the game-winning layup in overtime in the second round of the Division II NorCals to beat Bishop O'Dowd on the road. Corbett finished with 20 points, 16 coming in the second half.

Jonathan Craft, James Logan track and field: The junior won two events at the Dan Gabor Invitation­al. Craft came in first in the 100m with a time of 10.83 while also coming in first in the high jump.

Jack Freehill, Menlo baseball:

The sophomore shortstop batted 5 for 7, hit a double and had an RBI across two wins against Westmont and King's Academy. Menlo has started the season 4-1.

Ryder Frost, Willow Glen baseball:

The junior pitched four innings, allowed just one hit and didn't allow a run in a 13-0 win over Del Mar in a non-league game. Willow Glen has started the season off 3-1.

Zaire King, Ygnacio Valley basketball:

King hit a game-winner from the logo to help Ygnacio Valley beat Carmel 77-74 and advance to the NorCal semifinals where the Wolves eventually fell to No. 1 seed Santa Cruz. King averaged nine points across three regional games.

Jack Moxley, San Ramon Valley basketball:

Moxley totaled eight points and six rebounds and scored the go-ahead basket in the Division I NorCal regionals to help the Wolves beat Mitty 52-49.

Dylan Rossen, Burlingame soccer:

Rossen scored a golden goal in overtime to lift Burlingame over Dougherty Valley in the Division III NorCal championsh­ip. Burlingame finished the season with a 18-4-1 record.

Guiseppe Sigala, Archbishop Mitty soccer:

The senior scored a game-tying goal late in regulation in the CIF Division I NorCal championsh­ip. The Monarchs eventually edged St. Francis in PKs. Mitty won its first Division I crown in school history.

Henry Souza, Acalanes baseball:

The senior pitched a complete game, throwing 76pitches, striking out six batters and allowing just two hits as Acalanes beat East Bay powerhouse San Ramon Valley 7-2. The Dons have not lost in three games this season.

Cortevious Taylor, Granada basketball:

Taylor averaged 22 points over two CIF regional games, made a buzzer beating shot to beat St. Ignatius and helped the Matadors reach the NorCal finals where they will play San Ramon Valley.
