Criticism of teachers is unfair

- — Jim Tribbett Boyertown

For those who love to criticize teachers, try walking in their shoes. If you knew a teacher, you would not make some of the ignorant remarks that you do.

First, administration is responsible to a demanding public but cannot match everyone’s desires, and theymust comply with numerous restrictions, demands andmandates by various governmental agencies who are out of control. Funding does not necessarily match the mandates.

Second, the public sends their kidswho are difficult to control at home and the parents expect the “school” to correct for the deficiencies. Many parents lack basic parenting skills (may not have wanted to be a parent!) and are struggling tomaintain control, or may have given up.

Two of my daughters who teach have had several kids each year who are so out of control that they cannot devote appropriate time and attention to the other students. They are even warned by principals that “this is going to be a tough one.” One kid overturned every classmate’s desk and threw stuff wildly. What is the teacher instructed to do: take the rest of the class into the hallway to allowfor the de-escalation of the situation; and, the teacher and principal can do nothing about this situation due to governmental dictates and some of the public. This is not fair to those students who want to learn and do behave. Until the impossible situations of respect and responsibility return, it is a hopeless undertaking.

The parent of the “out-of-control kid” mentioned above is suing the schools for not taking care of her child; she should be sued by the other parents for interfering with the education of their children. How sad and sick. We, the public, are out of control because we will not let the schools do what they should. We should stay out of the way!

I speak of the troubled kids and what they bring to schools. Most are responsible and show respect, but they, too, are affected by the growing number of problem kids. Also, there are “special needs” kids and I am not referring to them. They are attended to with love.

Many teachers feel the need to purchase supplies for “their kids” to improve their workplace; tissues, wipes, paper, pencils and even clothing are purchased by the teachers for those in need.

We would not work in conditions likemost teachers have to endure.

They have one of the most important jobs in our society, and we should do our utmost to give them appropriate conditions in which to work, not give them discipline challenges that are impossible. And, as a community, our taxes support the future of our society as it should.
