Methacton girls tennis completes title defense

Methacton successful­ly defended its Pioneer Athletic Conference girls tennis championsh­ip Wednesday.

And the Warriors did it in overwhelmi­ng fashion, blanking an understaff­ed Pottstown unit by a 4-0 count.

Methacton (9-0 league) held out two of its singles stars — Mihaela Codreanu in the first spot, coming off a runner-up finish in the PAC-10 Singles Tournament, and Sydnee Markowitz in the third spot — while elevating No. 2 singles player Dina Nouaime to the top spot and having doubles players Alejandro Castaneda and Christine Benson in the singles bracket.

The results ended up the same, the Methacton trio dropping just six games in singles. The Warriors’ lone doubles team seeing action (Paige MacDougall and Amanda Amornwiche­t) turned in a 6-0, 6-0 verdict, Pottstown defaulting the other spots.

Boys cross country

RAMS SWEEP » Though Liam Conway claimed individual race honors for Owen J. Roberts, SpringFord used a tight pack at the front to take both ends of a PAC-10 meet that also included Upper Perkiomen. The Rams won against OJR (22-33) and UP (15-50), with OJR getting a split by topping Upper Perk, 15-50.

Conway covered the Spring-Ford course in 15:47, but the Rams sewed up the team wins by placing runners in the next five spots, headed by runner-up John Conner’s 15:56 clocking. Landon Detweiler was UP’s leading runner, finishing 21st in 18:17. fALCONS WIN TWO » The close 2-3 finish of Michael Neeson and BrendanWur­tz led Pottsgrove’s sweep of its PAC-10 double-dual meet with Methacton and Pope John Paul II. Pottsgrove outran theWarrior­s (25-33) and Golden Panthers (17-45) while Methacton, getting an overall first from Jeff Kirshenbau­m, broke even with a 19-41 win over PJP.

Kirshenbau­m outran Neeson (19:13) and Wurtz (19:14) by covering his home course in 19:09. The Falcons took six of the nine remaining Top 10 spots, with Antonio Decena (19:25) seventh to head PJP. TRI-COUNTY LEAGUE » Ethan Feldmanmai­ntained his fast pace for host Perkiomen School, outrunning Collegium Charter to win a Tri-County League meet. Feldman covered his home course in 18:55.

Girls cross country

WILDCATS SWEEP » Ally Brunton, finishing second to Spring-Ford winner Bella Marchini, led OJR’s sweep of its PAC-10 double-dual that included Upper Perkiomen. Owen J. outran the Rams (26-31) and Indians (15-50), with Spring-Ford’s 15-50 win over UP good for a split of the day’s race.

Marchini covered her home course in 18:36, followed by Brunton in 18:48 and OJR’s Megan Bernotas in 19:11. Top finisher for UP was LeeAnn Markwalter, who placed 25th in 21:55. METHACTON WINS TWO » TheWarrior­s were keyed by a 4-5-6 finish fromits three leading runners en route to sweeping a PAC-10 doubledual with Pope John Paul II and Pottsgrove. Methacton edged PJP 27-30 and handled Pottsgrove 21-36 while the Golden Panthers won out over the Falcons, 2432, for the split.

Julia Costello and Kelly Williamson were a close 1-2 for Pope John Paul, Costello clocking a 20;14 and Williamson a 20:15. Dyani Hairston was third for Pottsgrove in 20:45, but the Warriors saw Abby Konkoly (21:06), Ryan DeOrio (21:20) and Anna Price (21:40) cross the finish line in succession. TRI-COUNTYLEAG­UE» Perkiomen School got a winning individual effort from Eva Eicheler as it finished second to AIM Academy in a Tri-County League meet it hosted.

Eicheler covered her home course in 22:40.

Field hockey

BOYERTOWN2, OWENJ. ROBERTS 1 » Maddy Siejk and Sydney Fox each scored a goal as the Bears handed their Wildcats their first PAC-10 defeat of the season.

Katelyn Berger made 16 saves in goal while Payton Hughes and Ally Bardman each added an assist in the win. Leanne Faust scored OJR’s lone goal with help from Keeley White while Amanda Lamb had seven saves in goal. UPPER PERKIOMEN 3, POTTSTOWN 0 » Julia Duemler scored once and had an assist as the Tribe took a PAC10 victory against the Trojans.

Kaylie Siwy and Abriana Gatto also registered goals for UP whileMicha­ela Swenk posted an assist. Ebony Reddick had 33 saves for Pottstown. PERKIOMEN VALLEY 4, SPRING-fORD 0 » Kelsey Giese scored twice and had an assist as the Vikings blanked the Rams in PAC10 play.

Miranda Wesley and Kerri Hanshaw combined for 13 saves in the shutout, as PV got goals from Jenna Dickey (assist) and Laura Shelton. Mara Wrzesniews­ki also added an assist. Claire Kraft made 21 saves for Spring-Ford. POPE JOHN PAUL II 6, POTTSGROVE 1 » Jackie Lerro figured in on four of the goals the Golden Panthers scored as they rolled over the Falcons in PAC-10 play.

Lerro scored two goals and assisted on two others as PJP built a 4-1 lead in the first half. KatherineM­artin, Kendra Sykes, Kara Whitehouse and Stephanie Petery (one assist) also scored for the Panthers while Brooke Toenneis had Pottsgrove’s lone tally. HILL SCHOOL 7, PRINCETON DAY SCHOOL 1 » The Blues netted six goals in the first half en route to a nonleague win over Princeton Day.

Alexis Grippo had a hat trick in the win while Bree Gorman had a goal and two assists. Sarah Esserman, Eileen Carmichael and Maddie Mitchell each scored once.

UPPER PERKIOMEN 2, POTTSTOWN 1 » Ethan Moyer scored both of the Tribe’s goals in a PAC-10 win against the Trojans.

Jackson Lill made 15 saves to solidify the win while Eli Soto had an assist. Logan Pennypacke­r scored Pottstown’s only goal on a penalty kick. SPRING-fORD 8, PERKIOMEN VALLEY 0 » Owen Gulati and Matt Schweitzer each scored twice as the Rams blanked the Vikings in PAC10 play.

KaylaMesar­os and Julia Owens each scored a goal as the Golden Panthers led in shots 9-2 on the game. Pottsgrove’s Erin Carroll made eight saves in goal. METHACTON 3, SPRINGFORD 1 >> Lisa Jurewicz’s achievemen­t of a personal milestone highlighte­d the Rams’ showing in a PAC-10 loss to the Warriors. Methacton posted set scores of 25-9, 25-13 and 25-23 after Spring-Ford took the first, 28-26.

Jurewicz got the 1,000th dig of her scholastic career, recording 45 on the night. Teammate Paige DeAlba had 20 digs of her own to go with eight kills and 17 assists, and Carly Swenson added26dig­s and14assis­ts.

Devon Haag contribute­d 14 assists, six digs and one block for Boone, while Brittany Sankey had four kills and one block and Kerri Kearns added four kills and two blocks.
