Perkiomen School girls advance to title game

The Panthers defeated Merion Mercy 45-25on Wednesday behind Stephanie Falcone and Kristen Burdo’s efforts. Thewin puts them in the Tri-County League title game tonight at The Hill School.

It was their night to be honored ... and to shine.

Owen J. Roberts recognized the senior members of its wrestling teamin conjunctio­n with Wednesday’s match against Pope John Paul II. The Wildcats then went on to post a 64-6 victory over the Golden Panthers, one in which nine of its 12th-graders saw action, and all but one of them scored points.

OJR (6-1) flexed its senior muscle from132 on, getting pins from Adam McCormick (138), Jason Zollers (152), Xavier Ferrizzi (195), Connor Mitchell (220) and Bill Scherfel (285). Mitchell Dowd (170) and Micky Kohn (182) chipped in with major decisions, and Stone Bissland with a regular verdict at 132, as OJR scored 50 points before PJP got on the scoreboard with William Heid’s pin at 160.

Luke Resnick (106) and Dan Mancini (126) had OJR’s other pins while Tyler McCutchen scored a technical fall at 120. POTTSTOWN3­3, METHACTON 24 >> James Diamond and Jimmie Zazzie provided the finishing touch for the Trojans, securing their victory over the Wildcats — one that pushed them up to fourth place in the PAC10 standings.

Diamond’s 3-0 decision of Joseph Donahue at 220 broke the 24-24 tie Pottstown had with Methacton (4-4) through 195. Zazzie followed with a pin at 285 that sealed the deal.

William “Bubba” Gephart (120) and Mason Pennypacke­r (152) scored pins for the Trojans, Pennypacke­r’s fall putting his scholastic career total at 99. Corey Blue (113) and Dylan Henry (132) scored pins for Methacton in the back-and-forth affair that saw three lead changes through the first seven bouts. POTTSGROVE 33, PHOENIXVIL­LE 24 >> Winning a pair of close decisions, the Falcons opened a lead on the Phantoms to come away with their first PAC-10 win of the season.

With the score tied 21-21 after the 170-pound bout, Chris Quintrell pulled out a 2-0 decision on Phoenixvil­le’s Tanner Romance before Skylar McLeod followed suit at 195 with a 3-1 verdict on Bryce Thompson. A forfeit of 220 to Tyler Smith secured the win for Pottsgrove (1-6), which came back from an 18-9 deficit courtesy of pins by Christian Pace (152) and Ryan Finn (160).

Boys basketball

COLLEGIUM CHARTER 56, PERKIOMENS­CHOOL53>> The Panthers’ hopes for reaching the Tri-County League’s championsh­ip game were dashed byCollegiu­m’s fourthquar­ter surge intheir semifinal-round playoff contest.

Collegium got a combined 47 points from Ahmadu Sarnor (26) and Gary Grove (21) as it outscored Perkiomen by an 18-9 count down the stretch, erasing the 4438 lead Perk took into the fourth. Martynas Simamavici­us netted 15 to lead Perkiomen’s balanced offense, which included 11 by Ja’ren Hampton and 10 by Bryce Noel. HILL SCHOOL 66, PHELPS SCHOOL 49 >> The Blues saw four players hit double-digits en route to a non-conference win over the Lions.

DaQuan Morris led the way with 14 points while Bryce Allen added 13 as The Hill handed Phelps its first home loss of the season. Hill used a strong second quarter to build a 33-21 lead at the break. Chase Audige and EthanNorto­n each added 10 points in the win while Jake Stakeliuna­s added nine.

Girls basketball

PERKIOMENS­CHOOL45, MERIONMERC­Y25>> Stephanie Falcone andK risten Burdo combined for 34 points, and the Panthers took charge of this Tri-County League semifinal playoff game in the second quarter en route to victory.

Falcone hit for a gamehigh 21 points while Burdo added another 13. Perkiomen, which outscored Merion by an 11-6 margin in the second to take a 2716 halftime lead, qualifies for Thursday’s title game, which will be played 7:30 p.m. at The Hill School.

Boys swimming

OWEN J. ROBERTS 99, POTTSGROVE­59>> Mikey Prior’s two individual-event wins were the highlight for the Falcons as they fell to the Wildcats in a PAC-10meet.

Prior scored his firsts in the 100 backstroke (56.52) and 200 IM (2:06.45). Winners of individual events for Owen J. were Simon Crew (200 freestyle, 1:55.02), Logan Baker (50 freestyle, 22.96), Jordan Roach (100 butterfly, 57.55), Matt Rantz (100 freestyle, 53.58) and Matt Dinnocenti (diving, 259.90 points). COATESVILL­E 111, PERKIOMEN VALLEY72>> Drew Furcon and Bryce Nika each captured four first place finishes as the Red Raiders nearly completed a cleansweep of the Vikings.

Furcon took first in the 200 IM (2:09.96) and the 100 f ly (55.14). He also led off the 200 medley relay (1:45.65) and anchored the 400 free relay (3:32.36). Nika swam the third leg of the 400 free relay, led off the 200 free relay (1:34.31), and captured the 100 free (52.43) and the 50 free (22.25). Matthew Marsh posted PV’s lone win with a 1:00.07 in the 100 back.

Girls swimming

OWEN J. ROBERTS 96, POTTSGROVE 62 >> Alexa Luecke won two individual events to head the Wildcats’ PAC10 win over the Falcons.

Luecke led the fields in the 200 free (2:04.29) and 500 free (5:40.76). Pottsgrove got a two-win outing from Emily Glinecke in the 50 free (24.72) and 100 free (54.21). PERKIOMEN VALLEY 104, COATESVILL­E 78 >> Megan Gray and Elle Thorneloe each captured two first place finishes as theVikings downed the Red Raiders in Ches-Mont League action.

Gray touched first in the 200 free (2:06.04) and the 100 free (55.16) while Thorneloe touched first in the 200 IM (2:26.06) and the 500 free (5:41.26). Gray and Thorneloe were also part of the 400 free relay to close the meet (3:59.30).

Men’s lacrosse

NCAA DIVISION III >> Ursinus College senior goalkeeper Brian Neff was named a Division III Preseason All-American by Lacrosse Magazine.

Neff is coming off a sensationa­l season in which he earned third-team All-America honors from the United States Intercolle­giate Lacrosse Associatio­n (USILA). A first-team All-Centennial Conference selection two years running, Neff led the league in goals against average (6.41) and save percentage (.637)

An honorable mention All-American in 2014, Neff was also selected as a USILA Scholar All-American this past year, honoring his success in the classroom.
