‘Massive’ break: Water shutoff forces schools to close early Ongoing repairs: Pipe work and road restoratio­n underway

A water main break that has been described as “massive” was reported at Berks and Walnut streets Wednesday morning.

The 20-inch main break affected homes from Elm to King streets as well as homes along Walnut Street, according to Pottstown Public Works officials.

Crewswere called to the area at around 7:40 a.m. after cars were attempting to drive through the water. Water could be seen flowing down Berks Street, rising over the curbs.

The public works department was on the scene trying to make sure all valves were covered to get the homes on Walnut Street up and running.

Public works did not have an estimate for how long restoratio­n would take. Crews could be seen at King and Berks streets as well as Walnut and Berks streets directing traffic andworking on valves.

The break caused nearby Barth Elementary to close for the day according to the school’s website. In addition, West Pottsgrove Elementary allowed parents to pick up their children as early 12:45Wednesda­y.

Montgomery County Community College officials also announced via Facebook that they would be cancelling classes for the remainder of Wednesday.

“As a result of roadwork in the areas affected by the watermain break in the Borough of Pottstown, the West Campus is now closed for remainder of day/evening. All day/evening classes/activities are canceled, including University Center classes. Please exit the campus as soon as possible. This impacts WEST CAMPUS only. MCCC’s other locations are open and operating on a normal schedule. Thank you for your cooperatio­n,” read the announceme­nt from the school.

The flooding was controlled by midmorning Wednesday as crews continued repairs.
