-

Dorothy A. Knauer (Seeley) Seel, 94, of West Brandywine, PA passed away on Aug. 24, 2016.

Born May 15, 1922 in West Chester, PA, she was the beloved daughter of the late Guy W. and Laura Ellena (Kurtz) Knauer.

During her youth and teens years, Dorothy preformed on stage with her mother, a well-known entertainer, who encouraged her to attend drama school in Philadelphia. Ultimately, Dorothy graduated with high honors from Goucher College in 1945, subsequently teaching physiology and biochemistry at Vassar College. She married George W. Seel with whom she lived for 36 years. Together they raised a family, David, Susan, and Glenn, on their horse farm in Chester Springs, PA. After George passed away in 1981, Dorothy married Jay E. Seeley in 1990, living first in Hershey’s Mill and then Freedom Village, West Brandywine, PA.

Along with her brother, David Knauer, she helped renovate, restore, and develop St. Peters Village in northern Chester County. She was a developer, owner, and operator of Warwick Woods Campground for 15 years, a very popular family campground. Dorothy was a Girl Scout leader, very active in several churches, and always sang in the choir, especially as a soloist. She was a Trustee, Deacon, and Elder. Dorothy taught English as a second language (ESL), worked with women in prison as a mentor, and was a Red Cross volunteer. She was also a world traveler with a huge quest for knowledge and continuing education. Dorothy was a published author, writing a book about her mother entitled “Another Damned Dishwasher.”

But most importantly she was a wonderful mother, a kind and generous grandmother, and an appreciative, loving great-grandmother. Ultimately this is her greatest legacy.

Dorothy was the beloved wife of the late George W. Seel and Jay E. Seeley; loving mother of Susan Seel (Stuart Lucas), Glenn E. Seel (Patricia Davis) and the late David G. Seel (Janice I. Houck); loving grandmother of 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Interment will be private. A memorial service will be held September 30, 2016, 11:00 a.m. at The Freedom Village auditorium, Freedom Blvd., West Brandywine, PA 19320.
